Hey not a player of the TT or the video game, but bruja is absolutely a Spanish word, so the j is pronounced like the English h. A bruja is a witch, pretty equivalently to the English, and a brujo is a wizard.
I haven't looked it up, but I'm curious as to how appropriative the usage is, and what white wolf were drawing from exactly. Brujeria (witchcraft) has a history and discourse in a similar vein (haha) to the English speaking world from what I know (I'm not an expert), so a lot to draw on. Oh man.

It hits the "local low end Goth night" vibe pretty well lol

Minor thing- Caitif aren’t vampires without sires, they are vampires who’s blood has thinned from the original vampire and so are not actually part of a clan and have a way lower power ceiling

One of the things that sets this game apart for me, and I think is a triumph is what it accomplishes in aesthetic and atmosphere. It nails a feeling of sleazy 90s Gothic, bringing to mind The Crow immediately. Thoughts on the art direction etc on this game ?

Super excited for this season. Vampire the Masquerade has long been on my backlog of "games I hear are great but I missed", and after listening to WOFF/BSC/RLH for 5 years this will be the first time I can PLAY ALONG WITH THE PODCAAASSST!
Quick question, listening to episode one Gary and Kay talk about how hard it is to play this game on modern systems. I picked it up on GOG - folks who are playing, is that a good way to play or should I go through the (not my favorite) process of updating through mods?
If mods required, any recommendation?
Thanks

I don't remember a ton about the plot of the show but I did find it interesting. Back in 2006 or 2007 it would air late at night, I think maybe on SciFi, and I lucked out that the house I was renting a room in had a TIVO in the living room, so over the course of a month or two I was able to get all the episodes recorded and then watch them. They make some changes to the setting, the Ventrue are the "good guy" vampires and the show sort of centers on the Prince of the city and his struggles to keep the other clans in check. It's very 90s, I'll have to try and find a way to rewatch it.

Regarding the pronunciation of Bruja: it seems like they're just using the Spanish word for witch, which (heh) is said like "brew-ha". That "h" at the end , though, complicates things...

Excited for this new season. I definitely played this game but I'll be damned if I remember much about it. But working at a Babbage's/Gamestop when it released I took home one of the left over reservation promo items for this which was a Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines music CD. I should look around and see if I still have that laying around somewhere that would be funny. Also did either of you watch that 90s TV show loosely based on this I think it was like "Kindred: The Embraced", it had Brian Thompson (you'd know his face, frequent "that guy" baddie of 80s-90s movies like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone movies) as a big brawny Brujah bruiser... (I remember even less about that show than this game).

In Bloodlines the intro movie changes the Kindred who Embraces you depending on which Clan you choose, i.e. if you choose Brujah at character creation, you are sleeping with and then turned by a Brujah vampire in that scene.

Two things!
First: I love Gwen's music for this season! Exciting to hear the new interstitial pieces this episode!
Second: On the pronunciation of "DiMaggio," there is a song about Joe:

I have a question regarding Bloodlines that I don’t remember if the game answers. What is it that determines the vampire clan of someone getting turned into a vampire? Is it based on what kind of vampire embraces them or is it something that comes later.

Vampire! Vampire! Vampire!
I’m not able to play bloodlines right now, and won’t be able to in the foreseeable future, but I have been playing and thinking about all of the old world of darkness “splats” (the community term for the individual creatures (werewolves/changelings etc.) you can play as and their mechanics) for going on a decade now in a continuous world of games that’s been going on for about twenty years, and I hope that will be of some interest to both of you and the listeners.
The concept of Malkavians having a lol random bent to them came up in the episode a few times so I thought I’d let you in on some community nomenclature. The “fish malk”. This name comes from the idea that the absolute worst person you could play Vampire with is someone who uses the “insanity” of a Malkavian to make a character who’s defining characteristics are wearing a tutu and walking around with a dead fish. I believe this concept comes from an illustration from Vampire: Dark Ages that I’ll try to look up.
Re: Brujah pronunciation, everybody I’ve ever played with pronounced it brew-ha, with brew-jah being used on the rare occasions we’re referring to the particular strain of witchcraft which I believe has its roots in Latin America (I could be wrong on that last point though).

The Changeling game is also shockingly cool, a lot of unique flavor, and has great mechanics around discouraging fear of failure. Its very melancholy.

Your last episode got me googling Promethean: the Created, which quickly led me thumbing through the sourcebook and realizing it's precision-designed to tear straight through my heart. It almost feels like it's the exact opposite of Vampire thematically.
Where Vampire (as it seems for someone on the outside looking in) to be about people living in shared secrecy to try and build a society of decadence and hedonism at the expense of the larger world, Promethean's main bit comes across as people who can barely hide who they are doing their best to integrate into and help the society around them, despite the fact that they make that society worse through their very presence. I've got thirteen years of catholic school under my belt, and while these days I have no faith left, I DO still carry both the drive to help others and deeply ingrained guilt of being born a wretched creature of untrustworthy impulses who's deeds can never guarantee salvation. Guess which game's themes hits me harder!
I've always heard V:tM was a good game but I've never had an interest in its tabletop version, and I never knew there were any expanded world/spinoff games. Thanks for calling this out, it's been a great read so far. Great first couple episodes, can't wait for the rest of the season.

Regarding the Sheriff: it's never stated what his clan actually is, but we do get told that he was "picked up from Africa". According to the wiki/fan theories, this and the fact that he later uses Vicissitude (a Tzimisce power) could mean he is of the Nagloper clan (basically the Tzimisce of Africa).
