Unfilmable 76: I Saw The TV Glow

“It feels like someone took a shovel and dug out all my insides. And I know there’s nothing in there, but I’m still too nervous to open myself up and check.”

Finally some one remembers 100 deeds dog show ! I thought he was stuck as a dog forever lol

A terrific episode on one of the best movies of the decade so far! I have so much love for this film. It's a really sad film, but Schoenbrun fills it with this optimistic clarion call ("There is Still Time"). Even from my own cisgender perspective, I think the film is a potent reminder to live your own authentic self.

This was really good.

oh no listening to this episode made me cry remembering all this stuff. that birthday party scene knocked the fucking air out of me on first watch

i prefer this interpretation if only because the ending is so fucking bleak otherwise. i mean, having a movie about an egg crack moment end on the note "actually there isn't still time, it's too late, sorry" just rings false. It doesn't get easier to transition older, but that doesn't mean there isn't still time

Owen's monologue should be required viewing for teens/young adults.

i adored this movie and really hoped you'd cover it :) also i logged into patreon and saw the post *while* preparing my estradiol shot so that was some fun kismet

It's that reflexive apologizing thing from the end! My experience is a burden to others if I don't hide it (obviously not). Also (smiling so you know that no one is in trouble) I'm a she, not a they. Early clarity seems important! - K

While i enjoyed the discourse, this movie seemed super disjointed. Kaye apologizing over and over during the episode was a bit much but I understand they had a very emotional reaction, especially during this time in their life.

This movie didn’t land super well for me when I initially watched it several months ago, but I’ve developed a lot more appreciation for its direction and themes after listening to you both talk about it. Great review. Also I’d totally forgotten that Pete & Pete even existed so that broke my brain lol.

Just a side note, I love the idea of a Twin Peaks pod on the network featuring you two (plus Gary obviously if he was interested!)

Finished the episode and just wanted to say, the way you read this movie as ambiguous (as far as what reality is) is by relating to strongly to Owen when he says "this isn't a nightmare, it's just the suburbs." It felt really ambiguous to me on my first watch when I was in the suburbs working a crummy office job that was getting worse and worse every month. I have since gotten a new job at my partners encouraging and rewatched the film and feel quite a bit different about it. Also, loved having Gwen on!

Thanks for this. This movie stabbed me multiple times in the chest and it was great to hear from people who were also murdered by it. That birthday scene is the most existentially terrifying thing that I've ever seen. I would like to say that, in my opinion, the end of the movie is a lot more hopeful than it might seem. For the first time, Owen has allowed himself to see what's inside of him, finally beginning to crack the egg. Like the message in chalk says, "There is still time." Remember the kind of media that the film has been referencing the who time - it's not an ending, it's a cliffhanger. It will be resolved in The Pink Opaque season 6 episode 2.

I was hoping y'all would cover this! This movie messed me up so bad (affectionate)
