Today we asked if Bloodlines is fun. The answer:
No. :)
If the inverse of bad writing fun gameplay = good game can be true (metal gear rising). Then i think good writing bad gameplay = good game (bloodlines) can also be true

I think it took me playing this game, and then eventually playing Dishonored and Prey by Arkane to realize that immersive sims are the best video game genre. They emphasize reactivity through play, which I think is the prime strength of the medium and what makes it stand out from film.
Bloodlines might not have the best combat but so many other things it does with regards to role play systems is so much better than a Dragon Age Inquisition. I would rather play Bloodlines again than ever having to play Inquisition even if Inquisition is technically a more robust play experience.
A game that offers me a unique experience by simply playing a Malkavian or a Nosferatu compared to playing a Qunari in Dragon Age and do the same inane open world tasks is a lot more attractive to me. I think you’ve all already touched on what makes Bloodlines and so many other CRPGs of the time so special is that they simply refused to play it safe, and while they weren’t a slam dunk the things they did well is what makes you remember them fondly. More so than a game that plays to expectations.
