Prototyping Results - Imaging Software

I've spent the last couple of days checking out different 3D imaging software for use in LR2, and wanted to give an update for what I've found. I'll also be posting the design document in a few days, once the public release of v0.12 it out of the way.

My search very quickly pointed me towards what seems to be the industry standard of rendering pictures of naked women: Daz3D. I picked up some assets for it and spent a few hours playing around, seeing what's possible, and here's what I've found:

Pros:

- Very high quality image rendering. Lighting, shadow, skin textures, and so on are all much 

better looking.

- Highly customizable models. With relatively little tweaking it's possible to get any sort of body shape I want out of the models in Daz Studio.

- Flexible model poses. While the UI will take some time to get use to, the models in Daz Studio seem to deal with various poses much more elegantly than the ones I'm currently using. This should result in fewer strange bends or stretches in some positions.

- Large marketplace with existing content. As a one man team, the ability to purchase and use existing content (such as clothing and hair) is great.

- Scripting support. I haven't had time to play around with it yet, but there seems to be in built scripting support.

Cons:

- Relatively long render times. The improvement in quality comes at the cost of time. While not a major concern, it means I'll need to schedule in a little more time for imaging than I currently do.

- A new UI and workflow. Starting with a new program means rebuilding my knowledge base and comfort and developing a new workflow.

- Rewriting automation software. The concepts from my previous automation efforts will help, but rewriting them in Daz Studio will mean learning a new scripting language and replicating the behaviour.

In the end, it seems like it's going to be worth it to make the switch. I end up with better looking models and far more control over poses, lighting, and clothing. The major roadblock will be the initial learning curve, but that's nothing I haven't successfully tackled before. I'm going to try and find a few spare days while working on v0.13 for Lab Rats 1 and do some test images for you guys to take a look at.

Just a couple of curiosity questions for you.. :) Any chance you would share the HS cards for the girls? And how did you do the pregnancy models.. preg mod or just photoshop work? I ask simply because of my own tinkering with the game and if I ever manage to add some things artwork related would be nice if the girls were accurate to the existing artwork.. since it seems youre about to wind up LR1 and head more into LR2...

That's the plan actually! I put out a patron post a few weeks ago with a .gif showing off the current setup.

The gameplay style in LR2 is going to be different enough that I don't think it's going to be a problem. I'll be putting some solid time playing around with Daz to try and replicate the old style and appearance, I agree that Honey Select had a good look.

I wanted to congratulate you for your game. Excuse me for my English, I do not speak English very well as foreign. Your game is a super game with huge potential. However I think there could be many improvements. These are just proposals, I do not know if it's feasible. In any case I will highlight them: 1) Do you think it would be possible to integrate the protagonist so that there are real scenes of sex, why not also animations. 2) Would it be possible, for example, that after the training, the girls would not come with their old clothes but with very sexy clothes and that their words become more and more dirty. 3) Why not add a possibility to make them sex slaves ready for anything for the master with several choices. two thumbs up from me. The only problem I had with your game, was the graphics. The images did very little to set the scene, I would have liked to see background images for scenes like the coffee shop, meeting alexia on bus and stuff like that, also since you never saw the main character in any scene, Something Im hoping will change in the next game. I love your game, but Iv'e been playing around with replacing the graphics with my Daz characters. If you need some help working with daz studio, I might be able to help. I can tell you right now, your going to get into problems with skirts and dresses, they are often a pain to pose, and many do not come with any morphs other than for fitting. I for one am looking forward to see what you do next.

And there goes my excitement for the sequel. There are so few Honey Select games and here goes another one. I think DAZ, unlike HS, can look absolutely horrible and usually dips deep into the uncanney valley. Guess I have to look elsewhere for awesome HS models.

I'm sure you are already aware of this idea, but in case you are not, a paper-doll like technique would probably be a good idea for the project you've proposed. Basically in Daz Studio you would need to do some renders with your character model with a transparent skin, so you just get a render of the clothes. Also take a render of the nude model. Then in Ren'py you can layer these images using the Composite function. A same technique could also potentially be used for heads/hair, leaving you only needing to take seperate renders for things that would affect the shape of the mesh, like chest size.

Sounds like a good improvement. There is a lot of Daz stuff out there, and when done well it looks fantastic. I have the opposite opinion from Onan-- to me, a sequel is an ideal situation to up the quality of the visual assets.

Also, the question of style. Most Daz3D stuff is very distinctive as being from Daz3D, and may be offputting for a direct sequel. instead of a new title entirely. I'll be sad to see the Honey Select style go, it always seemed warmer and fuzzier to me, I dunno.

I also support eromancer and he just switched from daz. It is apparently very proprietary and hard to import or export from. You may wish to look into it more.
