Sex System Design

I mentioned in a previous dev log that the sex system of Lab Rats 2 was due for an overhaul and to look out for a post detailed exactly what that overhaul would include. Well, this is that post! One of the main features of v0.23 is going to be an updated sex system, and the changes are going to influence other aspects of the game.

The first step in fixing anything is identifying what's broken. For me, there are two major problems that stick out. First, the system fails to support pleasurable one-sided sex acts like blowjobs, handjobs, or fingering. If the "arousal" stat represents how close to orgasming you are, both of those should result in lopsided arousal gain. Second, only a girls orgasms are "good" by the rules of the game. In a game about corrupting others to pleasure you, the actual mechanics reward you for denying your character pleasure and giving it to others instead. There are some other minor issues, such as the current requirement to stop pleasuring a girl after you orgasm, that I hope to address as well.

My changes to the sex system tackle both of these problems with two major changes. First, to allow for one sided sex acts an "energy" stat will be introduced, replacing what is currently "stamina". Stamina was a small number (2 to 8) and limited how many times you could start having sex with a girl, but did nothing once the interaction had started. Energy will be a larger number (100 to 200), both the main character and girls will have it, and each round of sex will cost both parties energy depending on what position is picked. One sided positions will cost one person dramatically more than the other. Energy will come back a little bit each time chunk, and most of it will return at the end of the day. Resting, either at the office or at home, will restore more energy than working.

The introduction of energy will make room for sex acts like fingering, where the main character expends a lot of energy to give a girl a lot of arousal, but doesn't make blowjobs, hand jobs, etc. any more attractive for progressing the game. To fix that the way a girls stats are affected by sex, her orgasms, and your orgasms, will be changed in a few ways. First, girls will no longer receive a sluttiness boost just from having sex. Instead, those changes will only occur when one of you orgasms. If she orgasms from a position she thinks is slutty she will receive a moderate boost to sluttiness. If you orgasm from a position she thinks is slutty she will receive a moderate boost to obedience. Second, the main character climaxing will no longer be the end of an encounter with a girl. Instead, after you cum you will be limited to non-penetrative acts for a few rounds and take a large energy hit. Girls will no longer continue to climax after being brought to 100% arousal, instead they will drop down to some fraction of max arousal, making chain orgasms easier without being automatic in any position. In theory, you may be able to go multiple rounds with the same girl, all in one encounter. Changes to love will all be from dates and other interactions, sex may figure into those but it will not be the primary cause.

The introduction of energy specifically will have some knock on effects to the game. A time-limited resource will let me take some actions that previously advanced time and change them to an energy cost. Most of the chat actions will be making this change. They originally needed to be time gated to prevent the player from repeating them back-to-back or from feeling obligated to visit every single character and chat with them. These interactions can now use the same resource as sex, making energy the key resource used any time you are trying to change a girls stats. The recharge rate of energy will also give me some space to design upgrades and improvements to the office or your home that increase how much energy you recover.

These are the broad strokes of the overhaul the sex system is going to receive. I am currently working on the details, figuring out the proper relationship between energy spent, arousal gained, and stats changed. You can expect a future math filled post talking about that relationship!

Do you have a programmer friend to help you debug this project? Because it seems like EVERY play though I find several CTD / out of memory / "NoneType" does not have attribute "name" errors. I fix them locally but without a way to contact or send fixes for these types of errors, they just get dumped in this patreon and I'm sure that's not something you really like seeing, and probably looks bad to potential newcomers.

maybe add in several stats, i dont have a clear idea of how it should work so i will mention something most likely too complex to implement or at least too time consuming to bring into a functional state both parties use energy in activities and gain/lose energy over the day based on their shedule satisfaction might or might not be orgasm meter, meaning that not every girl might be satisfied with one orgasm, maybe add in some stat that reflects how "thirsty" the girl is, an inexperienced girl might be blown away by finally achieving orgasm while a slut is happy with an orgasm, but she is more or less used to it now also a sensitivity property of a girl, this could get boost from love or obedience, and it is simply how easily will the girl reach orgasm maybe also something like a "strength of impeding orgasm" a stat that rises over time to a cap, the girl will experience a stronger orgasm if she gathers this stat, it might represent how much the girl looks forward to her next orgasm, denying a girl orgasm over longer periods of time should increase this stat, up to a cap, i am not sure what should influence that cap, but it should basically be a value that the girl reaches by not being sexually active, while being sexually active, but not reaching satisfaction pushes the girl over the cap and gives her a stronger orgasm in the future, low value in this stat should not give a girl weaker orgasms, if she is at low value of orgasm expectancy, it just wont be taken into consideration and she will experience an "ordinary" orgasm finally girls should have innate, formal and momentary sluttiness, innate sluttiness is her slutty nature, even non slutty characters might have repressed sluttiness inside them, they are not outwardly slutty but they are easier to corrupt since they have affinity to be slutty, formal sluttiness is her outward sluttiness and i guess general openness to sexual stuff, and momentary sluttiness is sluttiness that the person gains due to mood swings, or being drunk or losing sanity in general (due to successive orgasms etc.), i like the idea of interaction between formal and momentary sluttiness where a girl gets crazy, does some things, and later she realises what she has done, she accepts it increasing her formal sluttiness or represses it increasing her innate sluttiness maybe, she might approach and confront you about the events from the other day/night, maybe she asks you not to talk about it, maybe she apologises about her behaviour, maybe she gets angry at you for taking advantage of her maybe she gets traumatised and gets a penalty to everything... also girls that are fanatical about you (high love/obedience) and very slutty girls should still be very aroused even from one sided positions such as blowjob as i mentioned i know i am probably talking about stuff that is too complex to implement or even if put into the game, it might be a big problem to take advantage of all the stats i am just writing a wall of text because that is what i do to express my self...

i kind of support that idea, maybe add a position or a mode into the game where the main character intentionally does not make the girl orgasm, maybe connect how successful he is at it based on proficiency in positions (how close he can get the girl, what chance is he will fail and make her orgasm) the problem right now is that there is a crisis where you are supposed to deny a girl orgasm, and it would be nice to have specialised tools for that also add in policies that allow/forbid employees to masturbate or have sexual relationships, by default everything is allowed, you can forbid female employees from masturbating, slightly changing the crises pool and encouraging people to get off in pairs/groups or completely forbid all sexual acts that dont include a male employee, to have more control over characters that you want to keep on edge (the policies could be mutually exclusive, maybe meaning that paying for one cancels the others, giving you an option to pay for implementing a policy that you cancelled, whenever you want to switch) maybe add a punishment system where you forbid individual characters from certain activities, or force them to watch you with another girl as punishment

Any chance of including in this new system some manner of orgasm denial over periods of time? Either certain characters may Like or Love orgasm denial or highly submissive characters may get satisfaction (obedience?) from being told not to orgasm. Maybe highly obedient characters get satisfaction (sluttiness?) from it somehow, too? The period of time may even vary, with some only enjoying a delay within a single sexual encounter while others may enjoy being denied over the course of days, weeks, it in extreme cases 'forever'?
