In this lesson, we break down the "number system"
Most commercial music revolves around the MAJOR SCALE - and even when it deviates, it only deviates SLIGHTLY.
This reality is oftentimes NEVER acknowledged by music production "influencers" or even accredited music professors.
If you want to produce commercial music, you need to learn the number system and realize the MAJOR SCALE is the foundation to everything.
Let me repeat that:
The MAJOR SCALE is the FOUNDATION to everything.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why do you think you never FEEL like you understand music?
Because the whole notion is made confusing in the first place!!
I could spend my whole life looking at chord symbols and terms...Cmaj7#11, Bb7b9, Cadence, contrary motion, sub-dominant, etc etc
Is your brain going to see PATTERNS in all these chord symbols and terms?
No! Of course you can't!
Let's REDUCE music to 7 numbers and FOCUS on what actually matters instead.
Having 7 numbers in your head allows your brain to recognize PATTERNS.
These PATTERNS establish genre norms, define every typical chord progression, and reveal MELODIC contours.
When we get to more complex ideas - MODULATION - you will actually understand it as only a slight variation - not some obscure topic.
People almost NEVER communicate how important this concept is to the foundation of the way your brain understands WESTERN MUSIC.
(Yes, there are other beautiful peoples in the world that do not rely on just 12 notes. Western music is very limited and repetitive LOL!)
For example, when you listen to a song, you can know how to play the chord progression of the song on the guitar or the keyboards before the song is even finished playing.
This is NOT related to talent or "magical powers."
(Although there are plenty of musicians who may want people to think that!)
Your EAR can develop a familiarity with the major scale and its harmonic PATTERN.
---
People then ask:
"What about the minor scale?"
The minor scale is INSIDE the major scale.
"What about the dominant scale??"
The dominant scale is INSIDE the major scale.
"What about modulation and key changes???"
All slight differences (one, maybe two notes) from the MAJOR SCALE.
I hope you guys try to follow this video and perhaps even watch it more than once.
The knowledge inside this ONE IDEA is what I use EVERYDAY to hear and write music.
I can't stress enough how foundational and repetitive this knowledge will be once you truly start using it to YOUR ADVANTAGE.
If you FEEL like music theory just doesn't WORK for you. Please watch this video and REWATCH it.
These concepts are simple and they will NEVER lose their relevancy.
Enjoy and good luck!
