PiMax 5K Plus!!! Review and Performance Testing!
Added 2019-01-04 02:00:01 +0000 UTCIt's finally here!!! The PiMax 5k Plus Virtual Reality headset is now shipping, but how much of an improvement is it over the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift?

Superfan Skaal sent over a pair of Confluence Brewing (Des Moines, IA) 5th Anniversary Porter, 2017 edition. It's a porter infused with cold-brewed, dark roasted Costa Rican coffee from Fredrich's Coffee. If that wasn't good enough, it also spent 10 months in bourbon barrels. This was a phenomenal beer. A lighter body than I expected, with a rich coffee and bourbon flavor on top, all without being too roasty. Get one of these if you can!

PiMax recommends a GTX 1070 or higher to be able to use the 5k Plus HMD, and I initially tested it with a 1070 Ti. It was very clear, however, that more power was going to be needed even for some of the less demanding titles in my library. The Lab struggled to keep 75 FPS, and Arizona Sunshine was basically unplayable. So to properly test the headset, I moved everything to a 1080 Ti.
I will be exploring in a future video more performance testing and possible optimizations to see if I can get the PiMax 5k Plus working at 90Hz on a 1070 Ti.
