If we torture the torturers what does that make us? Arbiters of justice and rightful retribution. Perhaps the guilty should consider the moral implications of the heinous crimes they commit. I personally believe a lifetime of torture is fitting for one who has taken the opportunity for many to have a full life of their own.

I'm very conflicted. The man being interviewed at around 18 minutes has raped and murdered 3 people. that is, undoubtedly, awful. But the thought of being so isolated, and alone, with the constant uncertainty of WHEN you're going to die... plus being left in solitary confinement. I've always been of the belief that the death penalty was counterintuitive, specifically because it is 'the coward's way out' after committing a heinous crime. but this is, simply put, torture. at least in regular life without parole sentences prisoners are given a chance, a social life... if we torture the torturers, what does that make us? This is such a large ethical question mark to me and I still dont really know where even I stand on this matter.

the picture of her as a young girl is devastating. to know she was abused and let down by her family is what led to her crimes....it hurts to see her that young because she doesn't know her fate but we do. in a way knowing what happened to her has led me to be a better father and better adult role model for other children. hopefully I can make a difference in someone's life by just being kind.

Europe and Canada has a 15 day limit on solitary confinement! Wow, I wish it were like that in the US. It's absurd someone can be forced to that for decades and decades.

You know... there are numerous cases of wrongfully convicted persons spending decades in solitary confinement. If this is what you're getting from watching these videos, I fear for your cognitive rigidity.

The joy of a dog, in its epistemologically different world, at the return of its owner, the unlocking of its cage. Who or what do we oppress in our journey for justice amongst those experientially similar to us? Who or what do we oppress in our need to emotionally disperse our human traumas onto those we consider beneath us--those who do not share our language or our cognitive scope, our social conditioning? What resources are used to manipulate and entrap people into worlds where criminal behavior appears to be the only option? Is it really human nature to kill or cage anything that we determine to be an epistemological threat to the maintenance of the mechanics we call social norms? I think we can collectively do better at using this forensic science to pre-empt the systems that entrap people in worlds where criminal behavior appears to them even momentarily to be their only path forward. Imagine if some of the resources we used to punish people were used to identify and rehabilitate offenders before they commit crimes. Imagining a better world is a necessary first step to its execution.

Yea and even the regular jails, is it about rehabilitation and reform or revenge? In some countries it's clearly not about the former at all, but at least be honest about it, and don't expect anything good to come out of a revenge system. Regardless of what these people did a revenge system has a very decivilizing effect, just as the death sentence does. It will produce more terror and violence and that's about it. The bad will get worse and you won't rehabilitate anyone, as has been seen in these countries. I understand that deterrence needs to be established, but this goes way beyond that and it makes convicts much worse, so any sentence that is over a few years might as well be turned into a life sentence. Do you really want that animal you created, or the person you made worse now roaming the streets?

I don't think death sentences are about justice nor prevention it's just punishment, plain and simple. The stress before the sentencing, the sentencing itself then the emotional roller coaster that follows, the certainty of death, the waiting, the appeals, the death row and so on... It's all punishment. And a lot of them, perhaps most of them, deserve exactly that imo. Long term solitary confinement and total isolation need to be banned though. I don't think making violent criminals go insane is how we should be dealing with them.

JCS isn't exactly a victim-advocacy channel. It's not that no one cares -- obviously, these are tragedies that cause a lot of anguish and we all wish they never happened to begin with. But it would pretty creepy if JCS made a point to say that constantly. There's endless victim-focused content out there if that's your preference, but I think many of us are here to find out more about why and how the crime happened.

I think I agree with the broader sentiment that this person has little to complain about when it comes to their lifestyle. That being said, my definition of human behavior has room for what that person did to earn their bunk, as well as how the guards decide to treat them while they're spending time together. I think we're all just a bunch of highly self assured chimps, with machinery that we can use to act on those assurances with. I thank god we don't have wings.

What if they're wrongly accused? The percentage of innocent people who end up wrongly convicted is between two and ten percent of an estimated 2.3 million prisoner population. Which would mean that anywhere between 46 thousand to 230 thousand innocent people.

This video brings light to the hopelessness these inmates feel.. but arent they on death row because they took the lives of someone else/or multiple individuals? Usually without showing remorse or empathy? What about the victims and the families of those victims?

The death penalty has no deterrent effect. There is clear scientific consensus on this. States that have the death penalty have much higher murder rates than states that don't.

Imo solitary should never be used for more then 15 days it is torture to the highest degree the mental damage that does although, maybe comparable to the actions the person had actually committed, are torturous for one to go through multiple times and for such extended lengths the warped self-image one must get. imagine not being able to see any part of any reflection for yourself for that long then take it even further to any vision of a human the damage is insane. there is no chance of reentering society, in my opinion, you need so much mental help.

You haven't been killed, though, and I'm guessing you don't know anyone who has, or who has been tortured, raped, or otherwise brutalized. I don't think everyone can be rehabilitated. I think that psychopathy is hardwired, sometimes by the combination of genetic predisposition, abuse, and brain injury. Quite often these offenders admit that given the chance they will reoffend, and statistically they are quite likely to, depending on the offense. There are some acts that are so perverse, so heinous, so evil, that they shouldn't breathe the same air as the rest of humanity. It's reserved for a very few.

Death penalty is horrible. No one has the right to take someones life, I know it happens and these people have done it but doesn't make it right for us to. Just an awful way to punish people who have done wrong. And I've had horrible things done to me but I wish death on none of them, just that they get can be better and take responsibility for their actions, and if they were dead there would be no chance for that, and everyone deserves one, we are all human after all no matter the horrible things some of us do.

My own opinion is in favor of death for some people, but I am not in favor of the State having that power. Too much corruption, and overzealous prosecutors who still send innocent people to prison.

Robert Lloyd Henry murdered my Meme and Aunt Carol in 1993. He brutally stomped my Aunt to Death and stabbed my 83 year old Meme over 70 times.He was executed November 20th 2003. regardless of your views of death as a punishment, I think this relies on an understanding of the intentionality of the actions of the perpetrator that led to the death. for instance, if someone is speeding in a car and accidently kills someone, they shouldnt be put to death - if, once released, they continue to drive dangerously, knowing the potential consequences and accidently kill someone again- to what extent have they deprived another of their right to life? there are numerous examples of actions unintentionally deprived someone of life, and the boundaries that separate the death penalty from other punishments are unclear.

Condemning people to death has been proven to not bring closure to families and does not act as a detterent for crimes which merit it. In fact there are little to no positives which come from it and it can have some negatives with sometimes victims families feeling they now have blood on their hands. It's important to know that people can very sanely commit acts of terror, mutilation, rape, etc. Understand that there is a very real beast inside you that when fed (mentally stimulated or provoked), can come out and become all too real. Insanity is different.

Somewhere I read the mother had admitted she let the husband be “too hard” on the two killer boys when they were smaller and I also read that someone testified that the father punched the mother on one occasion so it sounded like a volatile household. Apparently they were all punished for any tiny missteps and if true, that does foster resentment.

RC, you say "no evidence indicates any abuse", but that is not correct. Testimony at trial from one of the victims (sister Crystal) corroborated claims of abuse by the boys. I don't know whether there was abuse or not - but "no evidence" is not accurate.

The Bever kids responded to their environment. They were their parents' victims. Most of us, no matter how weird and abusive our parents are, have goals beyond wanting to be famous serial killers. I watched the full interrogation of Michael Bever and that is where the name was originally withheld. Perhaps in the original footage the name was withheld due to the fact that she was a minor and then released later?

He jumps immediately to questions like “what was it like to stab your brother.” And then he says “but we need to kinda try to stay more chronological with this” like he was blaming the kid for getting side tracked. This is where the system fails, and I believe the terms of mental illness in court rooms are either omd and outdated, or made up by individuals who don't have first hand knowledge of mental illness...and what of the psychologists that interview these types of individuals!?!?!

I was completely dumbfounded by the two boys. As I watched I found it hard to comprehend just the level of the violence they perpetrated on their family members. The upbringing they had is a warning to other families who wish to isolate children because of the 'evil' they perceive in society. I can't remember ever being as shocked by anything like this before.

I think the last guy should have been put in a mental institution, His actions clearly weren’t his own so I think he should get serious help for maybe 20-40 years.
