General YouTube Ranting

This is my third attempt at writing a post about other YouTubers. The first two were a bit... angry. Anyway, here's the highlights.

1. I fucking hate YouTubers who use a facecam with VR videos. It's fucking idiotic. I wrote about this a month or so ago but since then I've tried to find anyone who does it well and I've come away hating everything I saw. What's the point of a reaction camera when you can't see your fucking reactions?! Pewdiepie's the fucking worst for this. In his Rick and Morty video he's literally taking up over a quarter of the screen. Why?! WE CAN SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING. IT'S VR. THAT'S HOW IT WORKS.

(Also that game has fucking spectator mode stuff. It lets you change the fov and smooth out the movement so it's less jerky. He didn't even use it to turn off the watermark. At least try to make an effort. (You do with the fucking green screen.))

2. The amount of fucking channels that now seemingly exclusively talk about YouTube drama but don't consider themselves drama channels is getting insane. YouTube should be a center of creativity and art. It shouldn't be a self-perpetuating drama sphere. If it doesn't effect the actual YouTube platform, I don't give a fuck.

3. YouTube needs a fucking "up and coming" tab. Trending is BS. It's just TV clips, movie trailers and popular YouTubers. If they don't invest in new talent, AND SOON, YouTube goes the way of the dodo. YouTube doesn't invest in new talent and pushes already popular stuff so hard they're crushing the few bits that survive.

4. SERIOUSLY WHY DO YOU NEED FACECAM FOR VR IT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

5. Ad fill rates are so terrible right now. No idea what YouTube's doing but SOME COMMUNICATION WOULD BE NICE.

6. Every year with YouTube I've made more views and less money. BUT THE RESTRICT MODE GUYS, THAT'S THE PROBLEM.

7. Ad-revenue collapsing on the 2nd biggest website in the world doesn't bode well for the rest of the internet. Then again, video is a dick to host.

8.  BUT WHY A WHOLE QUARTER OF THE SCREEN?! WHY?!?!?

9. I wish this was a job you could take a break from. I'd love to take, like, a year out. Just go do other shit and then come back full of fire. Sad thing is anyone that tried it came back to no audience. A shame really, when you go, you go.

10. HAHAHA YOU PUT GOOGLY EYES ON THE HEADSET. MAD LAD! CLASSIC BANTZ MATE. LOL.

Smash that like button.

- Dan

PS. That was still a bit angry huh?

What about mixed reality? DrawWithJazza's recent VR video is an example of what mixed reality is. However, a great YouTuber to watch for mixed reality is TribalInstincts

kakol20

Angry but justified

shame how this is happening to the internet/youtube but at the end of the day, to use a overused phrase, at lease we have our own corner of the internet to inhabit. looking forward to meeting you at COXCON.

same

I'd still be here after a year off Idk about anyone else

Cameron White

Regarding Point Number 9. I legitimately don't know what I would do if I had to go a year without you. As much as you drive me fucking insane, you're also a big part of what got me through some hard times. I think that's the definition of love, right?

Tanner Corcoran

Obviously we're the dedicated ones here, but if Dan did take a year off I would almost certainly come back and would be really excited to see what his new style would be like after a year taking on a fresh perspective.

Mike Jones

I feel your pain, Dan. And I am only a mere member of the audience. I hope that YouTube evolves to suit its needs (investing in new talent, etc) as time goes on, otherwise they'll be stuck upstream without a paddle. Also sidenote: Your VR videos are fantastic and my favorite 👍👍👍.

AvidAardvark

More ultimate epic battle simulator please?

h4ns0n

Fuck Count: 9

Which Adblock are you using?

Vid.me already exists, so you've been proven right.

Shen Doodles

Would kind of like to see the angrier drafts.

Sandwich247

Maybe you can work on a backlog in spare time and decrease your amount of videos for a year? Although of course your channel is a lot of new games and current content... Hmmm.... Sorry Dan :/.

PurpleManners

Just so you know, we like it when you rant.

Bloojay

Totally agree with the while YouTube should invest in new talent. The whole reason YouTube makes money is through people watching videos. So surely they would want people to watch more an more videos. And I'm not saying I'm talented in anyway here. But I'd love to start YouTube. I have the gear but it's difficult to get started. Definitely now with the amount of channels on YouTube. So 100% agree with everything you said Dan. I knew there was a reason I became a patreon

It's not a YouTube competitor it's a replacement for the thing that they use to have where you pay money and get their vids earlier. They said this in the recent WAN show

Ultamatum

I can only immagine him saying it in a ironic or sarcastic tone.

Tyler Rand

Did you know that someone is working on a Youtube copetitor? Its the LinusTechTips company. They are looking for programmers. I think its called "FloatPlane"

Tyler Rand

Angry doesn't mean wrong.

Bill

I hope you always start each post with ' Hello Procrastinators' 😃

Shaun Hastings

I'd recommend you to take that break. I'd much rather have it that you are away for a year and come back to make the best videos ever whilst feeling comfortable doing so than you continuing to do what you do and slowly die from the inside :/

Tijmen Bergman

YouTube is on the cusp, and I don't know if they realize it or not. They're right at the point that another video streaming service that promises great income revenue, doesn't even need to have, will start to stain the image of YouTube and begin to collapse it to nothing. Here's what will happen. Site X pops up claiming to be the next YouTube, a better YouTube with focus on their customers, and am allure of better income metrics. Content creators will begin to double use both sites and test the waters. Companies will test the new ad revenue stream. Creators will see high relative returns because the new site owners have no overhead or greed yet. More will swarm over by the promise of high income and ease of entry. Google will fight back with some modifications to their pay metrics, run a marketing program, likely try and buy out or somehow sue the startup into oblivion if need be. If the startup survives, a solid competitor emerges and one with extremely attractive pay rates. Creators will flock for a bite of that pie. Viewers will flock for the content. YouTube dies off as a poor revenue stream for creators. Google sells it off to someone else. They try and fix the broken pile and may or may not make it viable again. Meanwhile site X is streaming along, and all they have to do is not make the same mistakes Google did.

"Smash that like button" hahahaha

Maybe you could do a "Year of Demma" type thing and pre-make weekly videos for a year. Maybe do a theme like "what I'm doing in my year off" (but make it completely NOT like what you're doing for your year off) that might at least keep some of your audience around. Granted, I know that would be a lot of work leading up to the year off...

Tustin2121

I like Jack Septic Eye's room camera for VR. It's actually kind of funny to see him interacting with absolutely nothing sometimes. I wanted to see you rolling around your room while playing John Wick VR. I'm sure that would've been worth a few laughs, like the time you and your friend played VR pictionary with the 3D paint app. All that said, I can see why a simple face camera would be pretty pointless for VR. To each his own, I suppose.

Justin McMurry

Maybe not if you only do weekly videos but when you do multiple (daily) uploads like Dan, that's a lot of work.

All you need to do is have a year long backlog. Can't be that hard, right?

elis one l

YouTube isn't the only one that gets promotions wrong. Kickstarter only advertises campaigns that are already over-funded. That's not only pointless it is actually dangerous; more than one project has failed because over-funding made them promise too much too fast. @Andy Wotherspoon, I'd get red if only to stop that damned Evens Halshaw ad that doesn't show video but plays 30 seconds of unskippable audio. (Probably AdBlock since if the video does show it can be skipped, but I can't see how to whitelist YouTube.)

Soronlin

Dan, I'm trying to imagine you actually saying "MAD LAD! CLASSIC BANTZ MATE" and it just doesn't work

Nathan

100% agree

Benjy8610

Same

Dan, I absolutely agree with you.

If you go, know at least I will stay and wait for you.

What about Robbaz? I've only seen his 'accounting ' video, but from what I can tell, his works.

Gavin Ironside

Hey Dan! I know you probably don't have time to read all these, but wanted to say that Robbaz does the inverted facecam thing where you see in front of him, I think that works really well to help for the times you bump into things and want to show people.

ranger10700

The other problem is that it's catering to what people (usually teenagers) supposedly want, which is to be watching what everyone else is. Personally, I hate that kinda thing and have no interest in anything trending on any platform, but I'm not the target audience and I'm definitely not how anyone gets ad revenue, so why would they bother to cater to my needs? Would be nice if they did though, like some options to turn off trending and have a useful algorithm for finding new content from people I subscribe to and new channels that are similarly not shit. Perhaps if more youtubers did vids like "youtubers I think are awesome" like you did, then it'd help with discovery, found a few channels I liked from your one, though guess it's as hard for you as anyone else to find new stuff.

Andyface

Are there other YouTube like platforms that look like they might be a better bet than ad supported stuff? I'd definitely use YouTube Red if it was available in UK, but not sure if there's other that are worth it and have a longer life than a few months. There was one being pushed by some youtubers a while back but think people objected to subscribing for content and then it kinda seemed to just go quiet.

Andyface

Again I want a puppy picture or a video.

Weronika Michalska

Totally agree on the facecam. It completely breaks the immersion, with your VR videos it actually feels like you're in the game.

Aaron Place

The time i understand the face cam is on the Upupdowndown channel, because they're is usually lots of different things happening in the room. With either a crowd cheering people on during a competitive game or other people in room watching the person react to the vr

Shawn Lindsay

Or people who put the title of the video in the thumbnail when you can already see the title. Oh wait... Lol... Love you really Nerd³ 😂

Codey Miller

when are you doing a vid about the Rick and Morty VR game? I would like to see someone who actually knows his shit playing this game and not Pewdiepie

Gulag

I think it would be rare that that cam would show anything interesting. Maybe record it and edit in when you hit you light

Septimus ii

Also don't get me started on YouTubers putting 'quirky' pictures of themselves in the thumbnails!

Shaun Hastings

There's a very specific reason why you're the only YouTuber/Creater I bother to support on Patreon (besides the obvious money thing that I can't afford the "The Impossible Dream"). Just keep up your own good stuff and if you'd ever take a break I would start watching your video's again on return. I'd probably let the Patreon thing pay you monthly while being away as well because I'm lazy like that :P

Tailmartian

It's always a joy reading these in Dan's voice.

Revolt Wolf

I agree with basically everything you've said, a lot of YouTube functionalities and YouTubers are really... bad, I guess. The VR face cam thing is kind of weird too, I don't think anyone should do face cams when they have half the screen covered up. However, there are some people who are doing kind of a "real life perspective cam" where the camera points outwards to show us what the person would see if they aren't wearing the headset and I think that's a decent idea, cos we can see what the person is hitting (say, a lampshade) when they say they hit something in real life, and it could be pretty funny to see them walking straight into a wall, too, so that at least have some added comedy value to it.

Winder Sun

I really hope the games you're working on are a success; not like billion pound success, but to put you in the position of stability for you and your employees; then you're free to do whatever you feel comfortable with, not worrying about frequent content by popular demand

iamlikemex

But no face cam means they don't know it's really him! All his weird movements in his rich mansion!

Yell at people on the internet?

fieryaleeco

Just continue do what you do best, Dan!
