New footage in the can!

This will be the North Jetty instructional tutorial. Do you think I got enough takes?!

I’m having fun. And it’s allll coming together. Time for a bunch of editing on these.

I’ve been thinking about more memories of the North Jetty where I’d go fishing with my E Muzeki band mates.

I was a fisher-chick from a young age growing up in Flour Bluff on the Laguna Madre which looks quite scenic in the photos, but you should know, it was infamous for smelling of rotten eggs.

I’ve gotta find some pictures of me wearing my Dad’s yellow waders.

You can walk right up to the South Jetty because it’s attached to the beach in Port Aransas.

But the North Jetty which flanks the other side of the ship channel only touches a small private island called St Joe’s and the only way to get there is by a white vintage metal boat that kinda reminds me of the one from Jaws when they say, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

I think we’d pay about $15 for a ticket. It runs back and forth throughout the afternoon, but if you don’t hop on the last boat back at 6p then out there on the jetty is where you’ll stay until the boat makes its next trip out the following morning at 7am.

That was exactly our plan, we would usually take that last boat over holding fist fulls of Subway sandwich bags, and attract a few gazes and reverent head nods from the boat driver or other guys who work the docks.

Sometimes we would catch so many fish it would take two ice chests to bring back all the speckled trout and red fish.

Those two heavy ice chests had to be packed onto a very DIY looking cart made of plywood painted white, kind of like a wheelbarrow, along with all the sleeping bags and gear and PVC pipes bolted to either side for all the fishing poles.

Thats how you’d carry just what you need onto the Jetty boat and then down the rocky path of the jetty. Mark handled that thing like it was an Olympic sport and probably should have been given a medal considering the balance strength, and speed required to maneuver around jutting rocks, and jump it over gaping cracks in the treacherous path.

So I told you we usually would bring at least a couple sub sandwiches each. It’s coming back to me, I’d always get tuna and cheddar to rip into as soon as we found our spot to set the cart. Then save the other half for midnight or so. So good when you’re really hungry and in the midst of the salt air! My kind of seafood dining experience!

And I said we sometimes would catch tons of fish.

But the night I wanna tell you about is one where we didn’t bring sandwiches and we didn’t catch any fish!

We planned to stay two nights and so we had supplies to make a fire and cook whatever fish we caught in tin foil packets.

We had a few veggies with us to throw in there, but there was nothing biting all night, at either end of the jetty, surf side or channel!!!

In the wee hours of the morning we were just strolling along the beach starving, salt covered, and sleep deprived, and we saw something in the shallow water that ended up being our meal.

To be continued next week!

I‘ll tell you all about what happened next.

Just know that we didn’t have fishing poles with us at that time, and the Jaws reference above was foreshadowing….
