I know I'm late to the party but I thought I would share my first hand knowledge of grenade operations. The pin of the grenade (specifically that grenade, a M67 fragmentation grenade, also called a baseball because it is shaped like a ball that can be easily thrown) is only there to keep the safety lever or "spoon" in place. Once the "spoon" on the grenade is released, the spring-loaded striker initiates the grenade's fuse assembly. Its fuse delays detonation between 4 and 5 seconds after the spoon is released. So if the spoon is held down, the fuse remains unlit and the pin can be replaced to make the grenade safe again.

2020-11-20 16:35:21 +0000 UTCFrom what I know, grenades typically are live once the pin is pulled out, allowing it to go off on impact. The pin can be reinserted to disarm it from the pin being pulled. There is a further cap that can be pulled off once the pin is pulled out, to set the grenade on a timer instead. The timer cannot be stopped once it is started.
