Big PathCompanion Update Incoming! What you need to know:

Hey everyone! I wanted to prepare everyone for the next major release of PathCompanion, which will include some changes that everyone should be aware of.

In the next update, I'll be adding the ability to link your player account to Patreon. Certain features that are not covered by the Paizo Community Use Policy or the Open Gaming License (and therefore wholly my own creation) will now only be available to supporters. Here's a list of everything that's changing:

• The tiers will be renamed to fit the theme a bit better:

  • Patreon becomes Recruit

  • Recruit becomes Pathfinder

  • Pathfinder becomes Wayfinder

  • Wayfinder will become Legend

• Anyone Pathfinder tier and up ($4+) will have access to the following new features:

  • Unlimited Characters (free tier will get 6)

  • Unlimited Campaigns (free tier will get 1)

  • Ability to upload character portraits

  • The ability to request features within the app

  • Custom Spells

  • Custom Items

  • Custom Action Cards

  • Custom Classes/archetypes (new feature!)

  • Ability to copy shared characters to your account

• I have plans to begin supporting OGL-based 3rd-party sources and allowing the Wayfinder tier ($10+) supporters have access to the third party material, as well as a clearinghouse where they can share and search for homebrew content from other players - whether they be monsters, items, custom classes, custom spells, etc.

Once the release drops (potentially this week or next depending on how my testing goes), you will be able to link your PathCompanion account to Patreon in order to receive these benefits.

What to know if you don't want to become a supporter:

• If you already have more than 6 characters, your characters will remain and you can continue to use them - you just won't be able to create a new character until you have under 6 characters again. Same goes for Campaigns.

• If you already have custom items, actions, etc your character will retain those, you just won't be able to create new ones.

But Rhombus, why are you doing this?!

PathCompanion is becoming enormous - much bigger than I ever anticipated. With the release of Campaign mode, Mythic, Deific Obediences, and many other features I've released but never gotten the chance to polish, I overextended myself in terms of what I can accomplish for the player-base (which is now at around 2500 users per month). I started losing steam and I realized that in order to continue working on this, I needed a reason to be spending my time on this other than as a hobby. I wanted to find a way increase the incentive for people to support me, which would then justify my spending more time on this project in order to make it great. It was either that or spend more time on some of my other endeavors and only work on PathCompanion when I wanted to.

I noticed that Wanderer's Guide - a similar project for Pathfinder 2e that also uses the Community Use Policy - was monetizing via Patreon in this way, so I decided to copy their model and see where that got me.

So, kleep an eye out for Release 27, which includes all these changes, plus a huge UI update (including background art!), much-needed updates and fixes to GM mode, and a few other quality-of-life improvements.
