/185/ Discipline-Flourishing Democracy ft. Lee Jones

On the uprising in Myanmar, plus Covid state failure.

Southeast Asia scholar (and Bunga recidivist) Lee Jones joins us to talk about the coup in Myanmar (and why the word “coup” can be misleading), and explains the nature of the forces opposing the military, in the context of the country’s recent transition to civilian rule.

Then, from 40mins, we discuss how the UK failed in dealing with the pandemic, and how this applies across the West. Lee's recent work looks at the neoliberal "regulatory state" and its incapacities, so we compare the UK's failure with Korea's relative success.

Can I just add for Phillip in particular. Vaccines are not magical. They are medicines like any other and ought to be well researched, effective and well targeted. Things can go wrong as we know from pandemerix and the swine flu scandal. COVID vaccines are in fact experimental certainly till January 2023 and truthfully for years. This is why it is crucial to get informed consent and to weigh up the risk benefit to the individual patient. The vulnerable groups we know correlates with the current flu vaccine cohort. I fail to see the logic of pushing for people who have had the disease to have the vaccine or indeed most healthy people under 50 years. Caution with vaccines is not being “anti vaccine”. Sorry this post actually refers to comments made in earlier podcast on three articles .
