Chore day

We had a job that we really needed to get done but we kept postponing it. The shields we use in our videos were in dire need of a repair. The brass shield edges were no longer sufficient and the handles were too small and uncomfortable to carry. Alain and Floris drove to the storage of Simon (our blacksmith) to get started with the shields.

First we removed the brass edges. After this we sawed and sanded the shield corners, we removed the handles from the shields, glued leather around the edges and finally drilled holes and stitched the leather onto the shields with a special wax thread.

Bobby (the man who played Claudius in our last video) is a carpenter. He made the new handles for the shields. And these looked very nice and also felt very comfortable in the hand.

We also made braided wax thread. This is used to stitch the leather better and because it looks badass!

It was an educational but especially fun day! Would you like to see more of this kind of content? Leave a comment in the comment section.

Yeah that's a great idea Gyula, and something we've actually been thinking of. A couple of the guys from the re-enactment club have been wanting to make a shield as authentically as possible, so that means making the actual plywood themselves, but even making the paints themselves. This would be a major challenge and something i've never seen done before, so would create for some true 'experimental archaeology'. Especially the paint seems super interesting, as it would really influence the looks of it. If they do decide to do it, we'll be sure to film it!

"Would you like to see more of this kind of content?" Absolutely. You could even make videos where you show how the authentic pieces were created. Even with modern tools but natural materials. It would be fun to watch (but a lot of work though I guess).
