We started our hobby years ago with the aim of living as close as possible like the people in Roman times. With the aim of making a documentary about the Roman army on the march, last weekend we made a hike through the hilly landscape in the south of the Netherlands in a place called Limburg. An area that is close to the Belgian as well as the German border. With this hike we tried to get as close as possible to the life of a Roman soldier during a march on a campaign, and have this experience as part of our research for the documentary.
As you can see on the pictures, our cars were fully packed with many things and we arrived at our destination. Unfortunately we had a delay so we had to set up the tents in the dark.
The next day we were hit by a storm. Due to the heavy rainfall, our tents flooded with water and the tent stakes were flushed away. Fortunately it became dry after this, but our stuff was soaking wet. The Roman gear we have is not made of stainless steel. As a result, our material rusted very quickly. As a result, we were forced to let everything dry and then polish it. This event was frustrating but part of the life of Roman soldiers who also experienced this regularly.
Fortunately, we got beautiful weather after this and thanks to the help of our friends from Pax Romana we had another great weekend. Next week we will post pictures of our hike! so stay tuned!
