And like the other person said above teams move down to the League One for financial decisions. Although North Carolina moved down to league one, they are moving back up to the championship starting next year. They share that stadium with the Courage, an NWSL team and have hosted college championships, international friendlies, etc. It's a really nice stadium for this level

MLS Next Pro just formed and is basically the u23 league. USL used to have Galaxy2, Timbers2, etc. in the league until a year or two ago. Most of the teams weren't competitive anymore, attendances at the home games for those teams were horrendous, & I think the USL got more stable so felt they didn't need these teams in the league anymore.

MLS next pro is essentially the same thing as Premier league too. Every MLS team owns an MLS next pro affiliate. For example, Atlanta United owns Atlanta United too… The LA Galaxy own LA Galaxy too… And so on. The reason why it’s third division is, it could not get professional status if they operated at any division below that. The third division is the lowest division you can be, and still have professional status in the United States. MLS next pro serves two purposes. If a first team player is injured and misses several weeks or maybe even months, he will be assigned to a rehab assignment on the MLS next pro team. He will play three or four games here to get into match fitness and also to get used to playing competitive soccer again. When the team decides he is healthy and fit enough he will be recalled to join the first team and start playing there again. it also serves as a steppingstone for Academy graduates. Players should graduate the teams Academy but aren’t quite ready to play on the first team yet will be assigned to play on the next pro team. This is so they can have competitive games and face, other teams academy graduates in a meaningful manner. They will be able to continue to work with coaches to develop and get better, and occasionally an MLS first team player may go down to that team on a rehab assignment after an injury so they will also get to play with and pick the mind of an MLS first team player to get more knowledge and actually get playing time with them or against them while they rehab.

The reason why teams bounce up and down between the championship and league one is for financial purposes. There are over 1000 soccer teams at the top six levels of the US soccer pyramid. Including NISA (national independent soccer Association) and then the three divisions below our third tier, which consist of USL league two, NPSL, and UPSL… There’s another 800+ soccer teams at the semi professional level. One thing you have to understand is the success rate of soccer teams in this country. Only one out of every seven soccer teams created will last more than two years before folding. It is very unstable anywhere in the pyramid. Even MLS has created teams that have folded in the MLS, the richest division in our country. The shuffling is just to try to stay alive economically until they can get some footing. Some of it is also competitive. The reason why teams show that they were created in one year, bounce from this league to this league in the other year… And then were founding members of this league in a different year… Well, that’s because some of these teams are very old. There are still teams in our country that were operating all the way back in the 1800s. They are at the semi professional ranks now just to keep themselves afloat. USL league one is the buffer between professional and semi professional. Clubs from higher divisions will drop into this division if they can’t stay afloat financially at the higher level and other clubs looking to become fully professional will end up landing in this division as they make their transition and hope to join the USL championship one day via an invitation and paying the fee. Soccer in the united State is very unstable, the USL league one is one of the most unstable leagues.

Charlotte independence dropped down for financial reasons. When Charlotte FC came about, almost all of the Charlotte fans became Charlotte FC fans because they were in the higher division. It was a huge hit economically to the independence, so to survive financially they self relegated down one league where it was cheaper to continue operating.
