Weekly Ramblecast 008: Give Deer the Vote!
Added 2021-08-03 22:07:32 +0000 UTC
We have entered the metaphorical (and literal) August, and it's time to talk about Alex's new cat. That's it, that's the whole episode. Oh wait! There's also chat about Vinny's love of laying insulation, playing a punk show on the Williamsburg sidewalk, multithreaded web servers, living in an attic, woodland animal suffrage, and that sweet, sweet Chattanooga public Internet access.

It's awesome to hear that Brad is getting into programming. He sounded way more knowledgeable than I did when I was starting out. I remember doing a ton of TreeHouse courses thinking I understood the concepts. I would then go to build something and realize I have no idea what I was doing.
I guess this still happens to this day with programming just in different ways. Yo, programming is hard :)

From losing a 13yr old beloved cat during covid and recently getting new feline companions, being in a band in Nashville and ever so slowly tip-toeing towards playing shows again, looking heavily at moving to Chattanooga to get ahead of the eminent real estate/IT bubble that’s forming (I work in IT so it would change everything), to having my wife share how amazing Alone is lately and how excited I am to watch it….you guys nailed it. This episode felt aimed at me. Best ramble so far. Thank you guys.

That was a weird experience. I had kinda tuned out while listening to the cast while working, and all of sudden was hearing y'all talk about Rust while trying to track down strange memory use in a Rust program at work. Side note, my favorite language to work in (libraries, front end code using wasm, services, etc). Second favorite is Haskell, so I'm not a big C/C++ person or anything.

Chattanooga Native here, and my wife used to work for the local fiber provider. Housing is hard, but apartments in the city are a deal! All have amazing internet that allows me to download 120gb of microsoft flight sim in a handful of hours.

happy to hear Brad ramble on the ramble cast, side note I wouldn't recommend moving anywhere right now I'm in the process of doing it and the market is psychotic, I've had multiple places get taken for 20-30% more than I offered and I was already shooting for a bit over what the place was probably actually worth, I ended up just grabbing an apartment for a year-maybe it'll all be less crazy in 2022? please?

As a musician who is putting together his live setup for the first time, this episode was super interesting! I'd love more insights from Alex about performing live. Things you might not think of beforehand but you should

ps: two sayings that will always crush a survivor fans heart "That show is still on?" and "It seems manufactured/fake".
Somone confused by the names, but laughs anyways.

Finally, my time to shine. Survivor. Ok so the Purple Edit first came about because of a player named Purple Kelly. She was a player on a season that had two Kelly's and she had purple highlights in her hair so everyone called her purple Kelly. That season she was mostly invisible because she ultimately quit due to rough conditions on the season. It's not necessarily a focus on drama or how much they're playing the game, but more times something the show doesn't want to bring attention to, or they simply don't have much to show. This can work in the opposite way and is why there is also a "winners edit" in which you see a player a lot more than what they seem to actually be involved or having much actual input. If a character just keeps getting confessionals and screen time though seeming to not be in the thick of it, they're usually making it to the end or even winning, the editors want to be sure to make the winner visible or have a semblance of involvement so if they do end up winning the season doesn't seem out of nowhere or anti-climactic.

Loved this ramblecast. To Brad: I totally relate to your dive into coding. I've been learning a lot of coding myself for things like HTML, Unity, Processing and using Atom with a lot of those. It's a hefty road but when you get things successfully running, you feel like a god.
For Vinny: Two of my dogs have been getting the exact same thing with the rash and one of them has the eye stuff as well. . It's real concerning how much this is just popping up.
For Alex: I remember missing one of your shows in the Bronx and being real bummed. Hopefully I can catch another show sometime.
As for the survival talk, I have been watching SurvivorMan where he's been very transparent on the all the behind the scenes stuff. It's all on youtube, worth looking into.

We just moved from Soap Lake, WA, which has gigabit fiber by the county. It was 60 dollars a month as well and glorious. However, like I said we moved. To Cheney, WA. Where we pay 60 dollars for fucking 10 MBPS!!!! It’s absolutely cruel and absolutely confusing because Cheney is a college town. That said we are in the rural area. If we wanted out to 250MBPs we’d have to pay about 160 for satellite internet.

Great cast. NY is a seltzer area. Alex should try getting some real seltzer from the Brooklyn Seltzer Boys
