The best 3 seashells theory I heard is that it is for 3 things you might do in the bathroom. 1. Pee 2. Poop 3. Both together. Futuristic Japanese toilets and bidets have similar settings. EDIT: I may have slightly misremembered Sandra Bullock's own expanation, which is Number 1, Number 2 and 3 is clean-up.
