Nextlander Watchcast August Movie Poll!

Greetings, Nextlanders! It's your good friend and movie curator Alex, and I'm here to ask you--the viewer!--which movies you'd like us to watch for the month of August. There are FIVE, count 'em, FIVE Mondays in August, which means that we'll be doing two Star Trek episodes, and three movie episodes. Since we had a few different ideas for what those movies could be, we've decided to let our Mission Control and Mysterious Benefactor patrons vote for what they'd like to see us, uh, see! Here are the categories we're selecting from:

Werewolf Summer Continues!
Given the preponderance of lycanthropy we've experienced over the last month with The Quarry and Gabriel Knight II, we thought it might be fun to keep that theme going with a trio of movies featuring boys becoming men, men becoming wolves, and in one case, wolves fighting vampires with guns. For this selection, we're including 1941's Universal Monsters classic The Wolfman, 1981's deeply disgusting (in a good way) An American Werewolf in London, and the profoundly and enjoyably stupid Underworld (2003).

A Mini Caan-athon
Last month marked the passing of one of America's great actors, James Caan. So we've picked a trio of his leading roles, most of which Vinny and Brad haven't seen or just don't remember super well. For this one, we've gone with Dave Snider's favorite in Rollerball (1975), the movie that arguably is his single greatest performance in Michael Mann's 1981 classic crime thriller Thief, and going a little outside the greats for the truly peculiar 1988 sci-fi buddy cop movie Alien Nation

Diving into the Sub-Genre
We chose this one because there's one big, glaring option on here that Brad's been dying to see, but then we kept talking about it and realized that it's possible that none of us have seen 1981's German U-Boat drama Das Boot despite thinking we definitely had. In addition to that, Brad will FINALLY get to see 1990's inaugural Tom Clancy adaptation The Hunt for Red October, and we'll toss in the surprisingly great 1995 Tony Scott thriller Crimson Tide as well!

Cruise Control
This one's pretty self-explanatory. Brad has never seen the 1986 high flying jet fighter action flick (and expertly crafted piece of military propaganda) Top Gun, most of us haven't seen 1990's attempt to turn Top Gun into a movie about NASCAR, Days of Thunder, and none of us have actually seen Top Gun: Maverick either. Now, there's a chance Maverick won't be out on streaming/home video by the time this rolls around, so if that's how it goes, we'll throw on The Firm or Edge of Tomorrow or something.

Now, perhaps it goes without saying, but any of these films that DON'T get picked for next month will almost assuredly come around later, so don't worry if you're favorites don't get picked. We have SO MANY MOVIES we still need to see! And while we won't be doing movie polls every month, we'll be doing them whenever we think there's a good opportunity for you to help us out.

Happy voting!

These are delicious

Edge of Tomorrow (All You Need is Kill) is really good!

Mark Wilhelm

So many good options there.

B&L

Brad needs to correct seeing Top Gun and Days of Thunder. Maybe off set those with the OG Mission Impossible? Or Cocktail for a random pick

Jason Green

Das Boot is probably the best movie listed above.

Eric Hall

The Hunt for Red October is in my top 5 movies of all time, preceded by The Princess Bride and Joe Vs the Volcano. So, I vote for Sub-Genre.

Legion Vs Ninja

Never actually saw Das Boot. Red October and Crimson Tide are both great. Let’s go boatin’

Michael

Sub-Genre with a U-Boat (or Silent Hunter, or...) gaming feature!

As criminal as it is that Brad’s never seen _Hunt for Red October_, the work of Mr. Caan is a near complete blind spot for me. One might say that I’m done kicking this Caan down the road.
