There was an Animal Planet show called Tanked that was exactly what you were talking about with the custom fish tanks, and like you guessed, there was a lot of spillage and bursting (at the seams, I don't think the acrylic ever actually shattered). And now I'm seeing that it got cancelled because of domestic abuse allegations, so...catch it in reruns, I guess.
