It went largely unnoticed until 2004-07 when the dubbed version streamed on Niconico Douga and posted on 2-Channel. It got memed and parodied to hell and back. Seeing this for the first time in the 2000s outside the context of the time and culture it came from must have been wild. Also fun to see old ascii-art memes and youtube poops that feel like they came from an alternate timeline.
