The Nextlander Watchcast Episode 114: Waterworld (1995)

We continue to dive ever deeper into the world of big budget failures with Waterworld, a sea-faring post-apocalyptic adventure so middle-of-the-road that only its astronomical budget could possibly be the source of its lasting cultural impact.

I think I am where Vinny is at with Spirits Within. I rewatched it while deployed in 2016 and it just was tedious. Removed from the “oh wow, this new CG thing looks cool!” I had, at best, difficulty caring about much about what was going on. I still rate it higher than Cutthroat Island, which was just painful, but something I can’t say I enjoyed. At least Waterwold had bits here and there that I found enjoyable and fun to watch.

Also, I started listening to another podcast that developed "The Helen Test" specifically while covering the Universal stunt show as a variation of the Bechdel Test. It was less about the quality of the female characters but asking if the naming of the female characters is as interesting as the male character names. "The Mariner" "The Deacon" "Helen"

Thanks for giving a better measured recounting of what is ACTUALLY added/different in the Ulysses Cut. My attempts to find a list of the changes was either getting articles & reddit threads saying "it really fleshes out the world" w/o saying how or an OVERLY second-by-second list of changes that was drier than dirt. I stopped scrolling through before they got to the Attol battle. The only notes I gleamed was the family offering their daughter pointing out something like "there is one less so we can have one more" and when saying all the things she doesn't have, Helen includes she could retire if she had a magazine.
