Patron Q&A 042: December 2024

It's quite a holiday-themed question session this month as we dig into favorite gifts, foods, and drinks of past and present, plus the all-important bidet update, the fate of Giant Bomb quests (and old videos), Vinny's signature scent, and more.

A bit late perhaps, but another 2 cents about the QL and "steamer trash" games. I personally really like QL style video's. They are very easy ways to get what a game is about, with commentary from people that you know/like/trust. Even when it's a game that might not particularly interest me, I'll still be interested in watching Vinny play 30-120 minutes of an adventure game because his enthusiasm is just great regardless of the game. And while playing an entire game could also be entertaining to watch, I would only do that if the game seems interesting enough on its own merit. It's very similar to Watchcasts about tv series vs Watchcasts about movies. I don't mind spending 2 hours watching a movie that doesn't seem to be interesting to me, so I can enjoy a Watchcast about it. And if it's a movie I know I don't want to watch at all, I can just skip that particular Watchcast. But I just don't like watching Star Trek TOS, for example. I tried watching some of it so I could follow the Watchcast, but after a while it's just to much time I have to invest. Which means there is an entire Watchcast "season" that I won't be able to enjoy. And if I'm then thinking purely as a consumer, it means I get a lot less for my money. The same applies to a let's play of an entire game I don't really like. Grab bags as an alternative "let's quickly go through some (new) games" QL, is not terrible. But putting those up as VOD's is really messy. Especially when the video title doesn't actually mention (all of) the games in that video. It can't be that much work to cut them up and put them up separately with the game name in the title? This is even worse when the longplays are just thrown out there. I started watching the SH2 series, but there is no playlist about it on YT, searching for "silent hill" on the channels gives a bunch of videos but in no useful order, and the titles don't mention an order either. Some titles don't even mention they are about Silent Hill, and some parts of the longplay are at the back end of a video about another game. Spending that much time puzzling everything together just isn't fun.... So please just cut up the video's by game, and give episode numbers for long plays. Final thing about the "streamer trash" games. Yes, they used to be a lot of fun when they were a rarity between "normal" games. But now it seems that this "4 player chaotic co-op" formula is such a common genre of it's own, it's really no longer fun to have everyone screaming and as a viewer barely know what's going on. But I know I'm a minority there, as those games do get voted for every week...

Brad’s “butterscotch crunchies” were called haystacks in our house b/c they looked like a bunch of tumbleweeds basically. The main difference is we used shoestring fried potatoes (from a can, not homemade, don’t be crazy) instead of the chow mein noodles. And sometimes added chocolate chips or peanut butter chips to the butterscotch.

That is a very fine collection of Whiskey that Brad has there.

To follow up with even more feedback about who QLs served, it's people that aren't interested in long streams. I've lost this battle long ago, but 2 hour streams seem built for people that work from home. A 20 minute video while I'm at lunch or taking a break was so nice to have. I'm not gonna spend 2 hours with a video unless it's background noise while I'm playing something else. It's personality based content, right? Your banter and discussion, not some random twitch streamer playing something I want to play myself. The game is almost secondary, I'm not here for a deep analysis of smaller games, but an introduction. The analysis tends to come from podcasts when you're sort of doing a post mortem. As for grab bags, well, instead of committing 15 minutes to a game I don't know, it's sort of asking me to click on 2 hours of random games I might not care about. The banter argument might contradict that, I suppose, but my point is that smaller videos absolutely serve a purpose when it comes to fitting into an adult schedule. And maybe bringing in new Youtube viewers that aren't familiar with you guys, as why would they watch a 2 hour VOD (that might be a random channel to them)? As a Youtube viewer, I personally find new channels with shorter videos. Granted, I don't know the business metrics. Again, that time has passed but I certainly miss it. I'll just say it: I'm sad that long form streaming has become the dominant form of games coverage.

100% this. I don't care about BigGamerJuice24 streaming the latest games, I want to see YOU guys playing them. People like your content because of YOU. It's not necessarily what you are covering. I really liked the 30-60 minute quick looks because it gave me a taste of what the game was and it was entertaining. I don't need a long play of every game. The thing about the grab bags is that like the caller said, you don't really know what's in them and it's hard to search for a specific game later on. If I want to see a game at giant bomb I could search "game name + giant bomb" and it would come up. With the grab bags it's a little harder. That being said, if these are not what make you guys money then it is what it is. Personally I'd rather have more videos than podcasts, but if that's not sustainable, then keep up what you are doing now. I don't want you guys to disappear into the ether like other Giant Bomb members.

Yup, I liked Quick Looks because I could get a look at a game while being entertained by these dudes that entertain me. I don't want to go seek out and figure out what creator doesn't suck for every game I want to see.

As Alex says re QLs it’s not the game necessarily it’s you guys giving an overlook of a game. I’d love a few 20 min videos a week, but also wouldn’t want to lose other content. So I guess I would like my cake and eat it too. Personally I’d like to see a regular co-op slot with all three in a game. Though I appreciate you do do a fair share of those already. But having said that, there’s not a lot of chat in games where you’re all busy capital G gaming. I guess I don’t know what I want so just leave it the same. Love you guys happy hols

Oh man, loved those GB quests and how they crashed the site. They really went a long way in getting me to stick around. I'd visit every single day for years afterwards.
