Concerning Ogres: The Eastern Khazars!

Good evening guys!

First of all, we wanted to thank you all the beautiful words you wrote us the other day, you guys are amazing… We feel so grateful (and quite emotional) for having people like you supporting us. ❤️

As we told you the other day, we’ve already started to work on the design of the Eastern Khazars the ogre faction from the Barbarians Hordes. And today we can show you the very first miniature for these bad boys!

To design this faction, we’ve been thinking a lot about the Mongolian Warriors from the Genghis Khan era. Although we still have to work a lot on the entire lore for the Eastern Khazars we know that they’ll be settled on the eastern lands of the world near to Mountains Lands of Khazaria.

The faction will be composed of a few tribes, depending on their village’s location. The biggest tribe will be based on these designs: Mongols and Huns. Have you ever played Ghost of Tsushima? They created very cool designs for the Mongols! Here you can see a little image board with some designs we have in mind: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1kQ1DHLGhQkUMuMdyp-TcasHFmBBai-g3?usp=sharing

Also, there will be some other tribes like a savage tribe from the mountains (the classical savage ogre with big sticks and rocks!) and other tribes with different design influences due to their location closed to other nations, so we’ll see some Imperial Ogres and some Arabian ogres.

About the size of the miniatures, they’ll be bigger than the standard human scale, and they’ll use a 40x40mm base. The first units will appear in the September-October poll.

As always, we’ll keep you updated on the progress and please feel free to comment any suggestion and advice, you’ll like to tell us 😊

And by the way, in July we’ll have ready our discord server to have long chats and discuss everything about the lore, design of the minis and more! 👏🏾

Hi nice style for your ogres. Alternative suggestion for a mount: Shire Horse. Big big horses with a stock measurement over two metres. Or something fantastical with an eastern style like yak :)

Christian Raap

I would love to see more of the Mongol / Steppes warrior set from the posted inspirational images. I was looking for exactly these and rejoined as soon as I saw them. Brilliant. Please continue past just Orges, They are cool, but I would love to see more of the humanoid size.

They are definitely too large to ride on regular horses, but Asian Camels/Dromedaries would probably support them, and would fit the geographical location. Whatever the beasts may be, like the real Mongols I hope we will see some lighter, poorer troop with little armor, and largely armed with bows, plus the noble caste with complete armor for themselves and their mounts.

Daniel Peterson

That's a very cool idea!

Highlands_Miniatures

I think that a Mongolian ogre theme could be really cool, maybe instead of horses they could be on wolly rhinos and be a super heavy calvary.

Cody Cates

When designing the Mongolian themed warriors please listen to Wolf Totem by The Hu on a loop. I think it will help inspiration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM8dCGIm6yc

Thank you Raven! The number of Patreons making printable miniatures for wargames has been increasing heavily in the past months, so these things are going to happen a lot. Anyways, this faction is going to be about ogres (not orcs or goblins) with different styles, including mongolian but also imperial or arabian. If we could only do miniatures/armies who hasn't been "created" by any other Patreon/Company, we couldn't do anything at all haha

Highlands_Miniatures

Very nice idea, it is just a pity this Mongolian concept is just being released on another patreon for their July release, for very similar creatures.

Raven

Ogre heavy cavalry on bears?

Nicholas McCurdy

Maybe a sort of conan the barbarian aesthetic faction too

Love these - do wonder what your thoughts are about a cavalry option which would fit in with the mongolian steppe theme - something like GWs origional Hobgoblins from 2nd Edition Ravening Hordes (that reference dates me !)

I don’t think a made up fantasy world can be “wrong”. They are getting inspiration from ancient Mongolian armor, not appropriating the whole culture. Ogres are a pretty common trope in a lot of fantasy war games and rpgs so I think that’s the right choice not to go with a more esoteric made up species. In most modern fantasy mythos, ogres are mostly portrayed without shoes so it actually tracks more to have them shoeless. Maybe their feet have a strong leathery sole that allows them to stay barefooted. I don’t think it can be nonsense because it’s all make believe. I understand the draw of being culturally accurate but your tone is pretty demeaning for a game of make believe.

Nicholas McCurdy

The sculpture, of course, is not bad, but wrong - it does not happen like this. The mythology of Western Europe and Rus & Steppe is very different. We do not have and did not have ogres, trolls and orcs. In the forest belt, there should be gobies, water and brownies, Baba Yaga and an immortal Koschey. In the steppes - biryuk, Albasty, Zheztyrnak, Mystan Kempir (it is better not to meet them) And finally, where are the shoes? Sword and armor are very expensive items in the dark ages. Having a sword and not having shoes is nonsense. Here is the song of the steppe people, I think you can see traditional armor, and color: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FlBCJbb2oo I suggest following these characters (better - all four).

So happy to hear it! About that, we've been talking about a very interesting idea that needs patron's help to create some special miniatures (like japanese ogres, for example). We'll announce it in July!

Highlands_Miniatures

I would say avoid the classic savage Ogres. There is a Kickstarter for classic style winding down right now. Seems like a waste of energy to produce the same sort of idea. I would be far happier personally with the unique culture styles. The above sample is awesome, and that is what I expect from you guys. Individuality that keeps me month to month. Doing some in a more Dogs of War style Conquistador look would be rad.

Jon Letham

They are lovely. The direction you are going with these is certainly right. Although I must admit I’d like to see some Japanese themed Ogres (maybe…).

Phil Walling

Do love them, though makes me want Scythian Ogres too now.
