The Winged Hussars of Volhynia - Full Preview + Lore

“We will find our light
Through their dead eyes”
Anthem of the Winged Cavalry
The borders of the Empire have always been a subject of attention and debate among the different scholars who advise the Sun Emperor, the great Magnificence of our time. The frontiers of the Empire are constantly threatened by internal and external enemies, who endanger and threaten the prosperity of the humanity.
Huge amounts of money and resources have been spent on all the borders of the Empire of Sun, trying to guarantee peace in those areas and security for its people, who live exposed to the dangers that advance from the unknown world. Dozens of navy ships are dedicated to patrolling the Coasts of the Black Sea around Esperia or the Aegean Sea from Caladria trying to anticipate any pirate looting. Infantry battalions scattered around the borders of the Empire and its peaks guarantee the safety of the mountain passes and the roads from the attack of bandits and thieves. Hunters and trappers patrol the black forests of the Empire hunting and chasing away beasts that dare to get too close to the farms.
But there is a border that never requires attention. A border that protects itself, as it is the land in which the Winged Cavalry run. The Winged Hussars of Volhynia stand out as the most effective cavalry in the Empire of Sun. Children of the Ancient Families of Volhynia, whom lineage dates back to ancient times, when the nomadic tribes of the east, simple horse herders of jealous customs and hermetic character crossed the steppe to join the glory of the Sun Emperor. Because of their natural distrust from foreigners and from any authority that is not part of their people, they decided in assembly to accept the contract that their Magnificence proposed to them. These horse herders who landed on the coast and united under the same banner, for the first time, settled in what is now the beautiful city of Nelsk, a commercial land and maritime enclave of great importance for the Empire of Sun that maintains its independence within it. Accustomed to the terrible threats of the East and the North, his horseback technique stands out above the other cavalry of the Empire of Sun.
In order for them to settle and form part as another state, the Sun Emperor promised them ‘evergreen’ pastures lands for their horses and also, they would be tax-free forever, being able to maintain their customs and traditions if in return they protected the border with their lives and swore allegiance to the Empire of Sun, a task they have done without doubt ever since.
When a young noble boy is 12 years old the community gives him his first foal, which he must take care of and maintain by his own efforts throughout his life creating an unbreakable friendship that is demonstrated once they enter combat. A tradition that goes back to the times in which to survive they had to live on horseback, always being alert to what was coming from above: Amphipteres.
Now seen only on the shields and crest of these horsemen, used to infest the eastern mountains. A natural hunter, who flew over the steppe above the clouds, smelling the fur of the large herds of horses and the shepherd families that guarded them. Thanks to their wings and feathered body, these creatures, monsters formed between bird and snake, flew over great distances in a matter of hours and were able to stay hovering for days waiting to smell the trail of one of these tribes. It was then, taking advantage of a gust of downward wind, that the Amphiptere was thrown in free fall from the clouds with a thunderous screech that triggered an old instinct in the blood of these shepherds. After that, at the back of the stallions and with the spear at their side, they used to launch at full speed against the beast, without the need of to hit their horses, because as their riders, they rode to protect those of their lineage. There was only one chance. When the Amphiptere opens their jaws, the shepherd must pierce the sky of his palate with his spear, or the life of the entire tribe would be in danger. The Trophy of the Feathers of an Amphiptere is the highest honour that a rider can dream of, being inherited between generations as a guarantee that their lineage ascends from those heroes of the steppes.
A unit of Winged Hussars will deploy in combat following the ancient customs of their lineage. Each rider is prepared for the harsh conditions of the terrain and five of them pose a serious threat to any flank of the enemy. With an effective charge, the Winged Hussars are also able to weaken the strongest point of a front, retreating instantly to make way for the infantry. A rider will always carry his "wings to combat" showing in each charge the value of his lineage, standing out above the rest those of the Old Shepherd, who will guide the regiment through the chaos of battle."

Hi guys!

Hope you're all doing well. We're full recovered from the COVID-19 vaccine we had a few days ago! 💉😂

Today we can show you the full preview of the Winged Hussars of Volhynia: the command group and the core unit, and the alternative version with swords for the core unit, and also the lore we've created for this unit.

*We've updated the pre-supported Winged Hussars to optimize some of the supports in the horses and around the wings in the hussars to make it easier to remove, so please download again the ZIP file with the pre-supported Winged Hussars*

We're working hard on the Daughters of Volhynia to create an awesome and special women unit. For now we can say that you'll be able to create an archers unit or a spearwomen unit, with different poses for each one. We'll show you the first miniatures very soon! 💥

Hope you like it guys! We read you as always ❤️

Printed them today and I am more than happy.

Alexander Eckert

Looking forward to seeing these on my table, great work.

A model with a historically accurate Warhammer? I love it!

Keg and Krow

We've updated the supports ourselves in the horses and around the wings and spears in the hussars. We've printed an entire unit with these updated supports and they come out perfect. Of course, we recommend you to use hot water before removing them to make it easier, and to use some cutter (like the one which usually comes with the printers, ex:https://elementgames.co.uk/paints-hobby-and-scenery/toolsap/plastic-frame-cutter-2019) to remove the supports in the most sensitive areas :)

Highlands_Miniatures

One great thing avout lagging behind printing your stuff is that I get to print the re-supported stuff after the fester people printed the first Version :D

That's great - will you be asking Atlas 3D to re-support the figures correctly as I would really like to print these off without ruining the figures removing their supports?

Paul McCarrison

Thank you for the feedback guys! As you probably know, the supports are made by our partners from Atlas 3D Support Solutions, so we’ll share your thoughts with them for improvement! :)

Highlands_Miniatures

I'm aligned with Paul - the supports (particularly on the horses) were so tightly packed that they fused and formed one "monster support" that without cutting it out wouldn't come away without damaging the models. Usually the supports are spot on and simply peel away.

The figures look excellent although I have to say removing them from the supports (even the 'thin supports' versions) was extremely frustrating and nearly impossible to do without damaging the miniatures somewhere. I think whoever does the supports for these minis could have made a better job. I got so frustrated and spent so much time on these and ended up throwing half of them away. I should just add that I am aware of the best way to remove supports and I have done this in many other miniatures without the same difficulty.

Paul McCarrison

more ponies! Yay! Can never get enough ponies! :D But yeah, your stuff is great. I don't use armies all that much, but I am actively looking for reasons to use your stuff. Beautiful sculpts, as always.

Michelle Linder

Excellent design. Can not wait to print these. Really appreciate all your work.

Just amazing!

Christian Förster

Will it be possible to print them without the wing regalia? It doesn't fit my group's motif.

Alex A

Amazing! Thank you very much Highland Miniatures. Love the nadziak and the leopard skin.

Thank you Michael! Hopefully we'll receive the pre-supported miniatures soon! :D

Highlands_Miniatures

Thank you Ryan! :D

Highlands_Miniatures

Thank you Tony! And about that... The gold shipment will arrive to Wittemberg in August to rebuild their Imperial Gunpowder School! (the second winner of the poll: https://www.patreon.com/posts/52111367)

Highlands_Miniatures

These guys look great. I'm looking forward to printing them!

Mike Snyder

The only problem is that I need them now! Super stoked that your headed this way (I voted for some blackpowder models but I imagine they will come)

Beautiful Models!

There's certainly some Sabaton lyrics coming to mind right now :)

DOPE!

Hi Nicholas! We still want to create a few more units for the Volhynia faction like cossacks, Hajduks and more, and also for the rest of the Empire of Sun factions, like greatswords or tercios, so we'll have some heavy infantry human units in the upcoming releases (depending of the polls, as always) :)

Highlands_Miniatures

Thank you Clive! Our goal is to create a "standard riding legs size" to be able to interchange different mounts for all the Empire of Sun army, so you'll be able to interchange them with next upcoming creatures (griffins for sure!) :)

Highlands_Miniatures

Do you guys plan on a heavy infantry unit outside of the female spearman? Or is that the ogres?

Nicholas McCurdy

These are super cool. I’m going to print that commander ASAP.

Nicholas McCurdy

Hey, these are great! But you know what would be super super supper cool? The Winged Hussars on griffins or some flying creature. IT would tie all the models together and allow us some knights that don't look like every other knight, but still fit with the theme.

Clive Henrick

Thank you Dave! :D

Highlands_Miniatures

These are sooooo good.
