Developer's Journal 4:13

Hey everybody. Hope you all had a good week.

A dev I'm friendly with had a catastrophe recently, so I thought I'd tell you about my safeguards against drive failure. All of my scripts and post-worked renders are kept in the Ren'py project which is maintained on OneDrive. I also periodically backup the Ren'py project on my NAS. All of my scene and character .dufs are maintained on a hard drive, and my Daz library is maintained on an SSD. Both drives are backed up constantly and automatically to a Network Attached Storage device. I also have a subscription with BackBlaze which maintains an online backup of the entire PC. So I should theoretically be able to work through a drive failure with minimal disruption.

If you've been following me for a while you know I come from a big family and they frequently visit, as my parents live nearby. When I've got family in town I can't just avoid them in order to work on the game. I've got one group of relatives coming to town tomorrow and staying for several days, and then another group coming to town after that. Work has frequently kept me working late recently, and with family coming into town it causes me some stress about finding time to work on the game. But somehow things will keep moving forward.

Anyways, that's it for this week. Thank you for your support!

Not only is spending time with your family a good idea. Taking a break is a good idea, for your brain and creativity. This way you can do both at the same time 🙂. It also sounds like your backup plan is the best thought out plan I have ever heard of. A very good idea, as even loosing part of your work could cause a nightmare. Modern SSD's are very reliable but problems have occurred due to other failures like power supplies. With this much at stake it is best to be safe 🤔.

I've witnessed a couple of catastrophes which have befallen developers. Hard drive failures are so easy to protect against, there are much worse things. Anyway, you seem to be well prepared for this scenario, which probably means that your hard drives will never fail ;-) The reasons for your family visit to cause stress seem all wrong, I hope you find nice moments too.

Enjoy family time

Family is key Monk. Never apologize for that. And it's good to know you take so many precautions. You'll find time in the end like you said. Enjoy the visits and take it one day at a time!
