Shelved By Genre Bonusode: Tales From Earthsea (2006)
Added 2024-04-19 12:24:45 +0000 UTCWe watch the wild and weird Tales from Earthsea film by the storied Ghibli production facilities. It zigs. It zags. It combines a bunch of books together, and then forgets what makes them special. They let Willem Dafoe whisper a lot, and someone needs to get the hell outta here and go back to SVU!
Check it out in the Shelved By Genre bonusode post!

So in this bonusode there's some discussion about how in the Japanese dubbed version of this movie Cob is voiced by a woman and that introduces some questionable ideas around gender and sexuality. But i think there might be an issue with subbed version Michael watched because I keep seeing plot synopses and descriptions of this movie that refer to the Cob character as "The Witch Kumo" and I think in the Japanese release that character is meant to be a woman. I watched the dub on my personal watch and only skimmed through the subbed version on hbomax to check some Cob scenes, but it seems like the subtitles on there are meant to be more in line with the English language release despite the voice acting referring to the character as Kumo. I don't know Japanese well enough to tell what gendered language is being used for Kumo, all I can tell is that when the subs say "Lord Cob" the va is saying "Kumo-sama" which is a gender neutral honorific that could be used for both lord and lady. I also can't find anymore discussion on the topic cause it seems like there's not a lot of overall in people who watch this movie as earthsea fans and people who watch this movie as anime fans. I dont know that this difference really resolves the problems discussed in the pod, seems to me like it just kinda shifts the theme of sexual threat from being a homophobic one to a misogynist one, but it felt like something to bring up.
