Shelved By Genre Bonusode: Pulse (2001)

What if the internet was really bad for you? What kind of wild world would that be? This episode has us talking about Kiyoshi Kurosawa's delightful Pulse, an apocalyptic vision of the era to come. Also there's a little ghost boy.

Check it out in the Shelved By Genre bonusode post!

Re: 28 days later. They read an interview on the fim podcast "Blank Check with Griffin and David" in which the director said that the empty London streets were shot pre 9/11 because they only had the budget to shoot them gorilla style, and had they had to shot them afterwards it would have been impossible as security was so tight.

Or if not intentional, one that helps reinforce some of the themes. The Be-1 itself is part of a micro trend in the 80s and 90s where manufacturers were directly referencing the design of the 50s and 60s with limited models or optional appearance packages, theres some resonance there i think. Outside of Japan it might require some esoteric car knowledge lol but I feel its a great choice for the movie, given it's history!

Maybe not super important but the fun little yellow car they drive around is a Nissan Be-1, a hatchback Nissan made for a year in the 80s (87-88) in very limited quantities in a project called Pike that created a handful of limited production, quirky cars marketed to young people. It was a rarity by the 2000s! Obviously the colour is striking and thematically appropriate but imo it also stands in for some of the lost attitude of the bubble economy, where a lot of money was put in to very niche market segments because /why not/? Similar to how Austin describes the desolate, late-Showa era architecture in the movie. Always thought it was a very intentional choice for a movie so deeply about post bubble isolation/depression.
