Joe Bob’s Thought of the Day: Political Edition

Has anyone ever considered that when you have two political parties clawing each other's eyes out to get 51 percent, the obvious sane solution is to change the rules so that a third, fourth or fifth party can join the conversation,  forcing everyone to compromise to get that 51 percent? Shouldn't the most diverse nation in the world have more than two opinions?

Yes, absolutely. Limited choices are still a constraint. It's a type of hidden suppression.

I've been screamin' this for years. As a younger man I even came up with the 3rd party: the bell party. Sort of a double entendre because liberty bell...but also because it would represent more of the people within the bell curve, instead of the 2 fringe opposites.

I used to be green party for my stance on evil Monsanto. I'm indie now since 2017.

Yes! Everyone should look into the Forward Party that was started by Andrew Yang. No official candidates until ranked choice voting is in place so we aren’t a spoiler party. There are a lot of people like me who don’t think either major party represents our interests and want another option. Believe that more competition leads to more cooperation and less division.

We tried to get McAfee elected. RIP.

That’s kind of the difference between a presidential and parliamentary system. My first vote ever was for Ralph Nader, to give viability to another party, the Green Party, towards this end. I wasn’t in a swing state but we know what happened here

I d vote for you joe bob!!!

In Scotland we have a form of proportional representation that was designed to make sure there was no overall majority and that parties would be forced into coalitions and work together. Although this hasn't stopped there being a one party majority a few times. The last election had the main party being short one seat so they came to an agreement with another party to allow for a majority.

Though our two parties have limited our options, too many parties can be more dangerous -in countries that have a dozen or more, a fringe group can get lucky with a plurality of votes. The people end up being governed by a party that represents the views of next to no one.

Ranked voting would fix that
