The rarest talent in the world is the skill of a vice president. The number two in any organization. The traditional word for it is “majordomo.” In police work, it’s a deputy. In Britain the monarch calls it the Master of the Household. But I like our term better, using the Latin word for “in place of.” A vice president can function “in place of” the president, but most days he or she is making sure the president’s decisions get carried out, perfectly, in detail, without ever saying “the decision was carried out.” A vice president knows what time the plane leaves, who needs to be emailed, what bills should be paid on what date, which social media forum is better, who needs to be picked up at the airport, and what statement was made in 2011 that affects business today. A vice president never asks how to do something, he or she just figures out how to do it. A vice president can BE the president if the president gets sick or goes on vacation, but a vice president doesn’t want to do that as a full-time job. A vice president loves making things run smoothly. A vice president knows when the president is wrong and knows how to break it to him or her without judging his or her character. A vice president can basically do anything that needs to be done. God bless the vice presidents of the world.
