Scathing Atheist Community Forum

Hey, patrons!

As you may have noticed, there are approximately a dozen ways in which people try to reach us -- individually on Facebook and Twitter, at the official podcast accounts, here on the Patreon page, and so on. We depend on your feedback for our "Listener Feedback" section, and we love the idea of creating a community of Scathing Atheist, GAM, and Skepticrat listeners where you can interact with us and each other.

So what we'd like to know from you is how you'd like to see that community take shape. Our initial thoughts are either (1) a wall/chatroom/message board hosted on our webpage, or (2) a Facebook group, something like "The Scathing Atheist Community."

Which of these would you prefer? Or, if you have a better idea for all of us to stay in touch with each other, please share it below.

Thanks!

-Noah, Heath, and Eli

Any Forum hosting platform that supports Tapatalk integration would rock. I have for years now followed several forums with this method. It is a great app and allows users to get notifications at whatever level of annoyance they want. https://tapatalk.com/start-here.php

This forum works for me.

It comes down to this I think. A non-facebook option will be more inclusive and really give everyone the chance to join in and be more ''fair'', but since it will be a ''stand alone'' platform which 90% of the people will have to install for the sole purpose of this forum, will be realistically much more sparsely populated and less active than if it was on Facebook. Having it on facebook sacrifices our 10% tinfoil-hat cohort at the price of a larger membership and more active community. Personally, I'd say Facebook and execute everyone who disagrees... but I am clearly not leadership material so I am willing defer to your Unholy Quartet's wisdom. If you go another way, I for one would install whatever is needed. I recognize that I too would have very pressing privacy concerns if like many of you I lived in a milieu where my open atheism posed serious threat to my family life, professional life or life period. Nevermind what you look like with that tinfoil hat on, I in truth have massive respect and empathy for what you're going through... Also, common, this show is the funniest thing on the internet, I'll go wherever you guys are hanging out, facebook or not.

There are a reasonable number of people who do not, and will not (for various reasons), use Facebook - me included. This is a difficult balance between the people who are on Facebook and want to get all of there "stuff" in one place vs. the people who are on Facebook who don't trust the private groups or have other privacy issues (I do know stories of this accidentally outing people, more due to the complexity of trying to manage keeping things private) vs. people who are not on Facebook and want to be part of this community. Of course, with any system, there are privacy and security concerns, but as long as acceptable anonymity is allowed and preserved, I think most people would/could be happy with a hosted community - at least it wouldn't be exclusionary.

If a secret Facebook group weren't extremely reliable I'd already be having some issues. I've been in them for many many years with no issues at all.

A closed or even secret Facebook group would the ideal for me. Plus because of the wide use of Facebook there could be ways that it could help build your audience.

Slack seems like it would be great but the limitations of the free offering, that it only saves 10k worth of messages could be a problem, depending. tbh it seems like the answer to your question would be which medium has the lowest bar of entry to engage the community at the level you'd like. For me the medium with the lowest bar is FB, but it is a sewer. If you all wanted something more you all could see about using the open source slack clone, mattermost, which won't have the message limit that slack does.

You know, either a Telegram Channel to give out updates and links, or a full blown Telegram group where everyone can chat could be fun. Maybe just dedicated IRC? I don't Facebook...

WM

I'd be happiest with a closed FB group, but I understand others' concern about anonymity.
