I have been a teacher in public education for 28 years. It is hurtful how you guys talk so negatively about public education all the time. I agree that there are serious problems in public education, but a child can still get a good education in public schools. If more parents like you would demand that we do better for public education rather than abandon it for private schools then we would all be better off. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to do so. We should be demanding that our public schools be fully funded, not allowing for the diversion of public funding to charter and private schools.

I'd add that another downside of the 'brave atheist' approach is it leaves people like me feeling as alone and as cowardly as the theists you mention. I tune in to the Atheist Experience shows and all I get is Mark Twain or "we know the value of each moment of life" stuff. Or "you won't feel it so don't fear it". You guys talk openly about the void, and the abyss, and the terror that comes from thinking about it. It is profoundly comforting to hear someone else share your fears. So thank you.

2022-07-21 20:57:45 +0000 UTCI make the distinction that I am not afraid of death, I'm afraid of dying. Being dead is not scary because there is nothing to experience. Dying on the other hand is scary. That can be painful and terrifying and heartbreaking. I dont want to hurt and I dont want to hurt others so dying sucks a lot.

2022-07-21 13:59:22 +0000 UTCIts a minor quibble, but I think I disagree when Noah says the religious have a better answer to the death question, much less a 'really fucking good' one. Its a worse answer than meh and pithy quotes. Because it's wrong. Its wrong, useless, and gets in the way. It's as far from really good as one might attempt to get, fundamentally speaking.
