The sofa-bed at the apartment must be the comfiest makeshift bed Jeongguk had ever slept in. When coming back to Busan, he didn’t have a lot of options of where to stay. Going back to his parents’ home wasn’t an option, and the room he was trying to rent fell through two days before his trip back. If it wasn't for his hyung offering him a place to stay, he might as well sleep at the beach.

He could have slept more, but being in the living room meant he could hear everything going on in the apartment. So he heard Namjoon leaving early to work out, and when he got back dripping in sweat, before the sun was even out. Jungkook didn’t have a gym membership yet, nor the means to afford one in his current situation, but maybe he could run around the neighborhood if he missed working out enough.

“Want breakfast, Gukah?”

Namjoon asked as he left the bathroom, drying his hands on his cotton shorts, not bothering to mask a yawn.

Jeongguk was sitting by the small table in the corner of the kitchen when Namjoon hyung threw him a protein bar. He shouldn’t have expected his older cousin to cook, really. Some things never changed.

“Hyung.” Jeongguk softly called, looking to the door of the kitchen to make sure you weren’t anywhere near. “Can I ask you something?”

“What’s up?”

After blending his protein powder and frozen bananas, the older man sat on the opposite chair to him. Jeongguk stared at the wrapping on the bar in front of him, as if trying to poke holes on it.

He wasn’t as shy as he used to be, his lisp and stuttering were mostly gone. Jeongguk had more confidence now, could look girls in the eyes, some would even say he had game.

And he had a crush on you.

Which kinda canceled all of the above.

Now, Jeongguk has had a crush on you for years. Platonic, of course, the kind where he knew nothing would ever happen because you only saw him as your best friend’s little cousin. If you even saw him at all. A crush that had been dormant for the past however many years.

Coming back to Busan, to live in your apartment, Jeongguk wondered if his young boy feelings would return to him eventually. He knew he was fucked when they hit him like a ton of bricks, merely ten minutes after being in your presence again. It was enough for him to remember how the crush started in the first place.

So maybe now that he was older, more mature, and he looked like a man, he could finally have his chance. But there was one thing he needed to get out of the way first.

So he blurted out the question that had been on his mind all day yesterday:

“Are Yoongi hyung and noona dating?”

“Guk.” his nickname came as a groan.

Namjoon hyung knew of his juvenile feelings, there was no point in hiding anything now. Jeongguk simply shrugged at his unspoken question.

“It’s complicated.”

“It’s a yes or no question, hyung.”

“No.” Namjoon took a deep breath. “They aren’t dating. They have a friends with benefits kind of thing. Yoongi hyung hooks up with Hobi hyung too, so I guess they never made it official. I know the three of them hook up together too, but not as often.”

“Okay.”

He could definitely work with that.

“If I told you to not get involved with them, would you listen?”

Before Jeongguk had the chance to say anything, you walked into the kitchen. And he was sure you were wearing pants when you went to sleep last night, but right now you weren’t wearing anything but an old Nirvana t-shirt, too big to be yours. He hoped it belonged to Namjoon hyung.

“Morning.” you said as you regarded the two sitting by the table. “Oh, fuck no.”

You walked to them, snatching the protein bar from Jungkook’s tattooed hand.

“Don’t let Joon make you believe this is real food.” you told the boy, sending your best friend a pointed look. “Do you like pancakes, Guk?”

“I’ll like anything you make, noona.”

Everyone at MKP seemed to warm up to Jeongguk pretty quickly. Well, Hoseok seemed to have warmed up to him pretty quickly. Yoongi was a little more wary of new people, but that was just how he was. So while the apprentice followed the sunshine of a man in the studios, shadowing him as he recorded some ad-libs from a girl who was creating a demo to audition for a trainee position, you and Yoongi worked on another set of songs from the same client.

“Would you ever do it?” you asked as you sent Yoongi the file you had just finished working on.

“Hm?”

“Would you ever be an idol?”

Yoongi’s cute nose scrunched as he looked at you as if you were crazy.

“I wouldn’t dance.”

“Don’t sound so disgusted, I’ve seen you shaking that ass.” you giggled.

“I have a great ass.”

“Can’t argue with that.”

While Yoongi ignored his own pink cheeks and Joon ignored the usual flirting that went on almost daily, you answered some of the emails on your inbox.

“I wouldn't sing either.” he said, distracted by your recent file.

“Idols can rap too.” you shrugged. “The three of you could form a group.”

“That would be fun.” Namjoon agreed from the other side.

While the three of them made a living from producing music for others, Yoongi, Namjoon and Hoseok did their own thing as well. The three of them were rappers, each with their unique styles and their own stage names and released mixtapes.

But maybe the world wasn’t ready for the three of them together as a unit.

“What would be fun?” Hoseok had caught the end of the conversation as he and Jeongguk made it up the stairs.

“Don’t listen to them.” Yoongi said, eyes not leaving his screen.

“How did it go?”

You asked the youngest of the group, who was really excited about shadowing Hobi in the studios.

“It was so fun, noona.” Jeongguk pulled his chair from the corner of Namjoon’s desk and rolled it to your side. “Hyung, could you move a little?”

Jeongguk looked expectantly at Yoongi, who’s eyes squinted as the boy sat between you and him. Not a fan of having his personal space invaded by strangers, Yoongi relented and scooted a little further away from you.

“What do we do now?” he asked with big eyes and a bunny smile.

“Oh, you’re shadowing me now?” you giggled again and he nodded, blue strands moving with the movement. “Alright, let’s open the new file you guys recorded and I’ll teach you how to add it to the song we already have.”

As much as you preferred to use noise canceling headphones, they made coworking impossible. So you connected your earbuds to your computer instead and gave Jeongguk one of the sides as you kept another one.

Showing and explaining what you were doing was tricky at first, since you were so used to just whooshing through all the steps to get it done, but now you had the boy watching you. Jeongguk sounded amazed at everything you did and as the minutes passed, he got closer and closer to the screen, shoulder practically stuck to yours.

You didn't know what cologne he was wearing, but it was nice. A little on the sweeter side. Or maybe it was his shampoo?

You turned your head to the side, attracted to the scent, and Jeongguk looked at you then. He had a little mole under his bottom lip, more prominent as he nibbled on it. The scar on his cheek was fainter than you remembered.

Jeongguk was never ugly, even in his awkward teenage stages, he'd always been cute. And he was still cute, but there were other words you'd use to describe him now.

Handsome. Hot. Big. Sanity impairing.

"What's next, noona?"

His tone was but a whisper, voice just a little lower, just a little scratchier. He knew you were staring at him, how could he not? You blinked a few times.

"Oh, yeah, so… We correct the overlay now." you said.

Jeongguk giggled. "We did that already!"

Right. You knew that.

"Are you guys done?" Yoongi's annoyed voice brought you to earth.

"Just about." you informed.

The older man needed your part to be over so he could do his, and it was taking you longer than usual to send him the file. Of course he'd be annoyed.

“No way you got Yoongi hyung to leave his cave!”

Taehyung was clearly amused about your older friend following you to the beach at the end of the work day. If it was up to Yoongi, he’d pull an all nighter just to be ahead of the workload. But not today. Today he accepted your invitation to catch the sunset on the beach.

Tae and Jimin were already at a good spot by the sand, the couple was sharing a blanket and another one was set aside for your –not so small– group. Yoongi and Hoseok rushed to occupy it, neither of them were really fans of the sand in the first place.

Namjoon followed behind them, but he knew he was too big to fit there too. You already had your shoes in your hands and your toes in the sand. Jeongguk didn’t mind it either, removing his sneakers and waiting for you to sit so he could do the same.

“Guys, this is Jeongguk.” you introduced your two friends to the new boy. “Guk, Tae, Jimin.”

“Hyungs.” Jeongguk bowed politely to the two.

“Yah, didn’t you bring any food?” Hoseok looked around the two men.

It was the end of the day and you were all really hungry after skipping lunch to make sure your deadlines for the day were met. Fortunately it was a rare occurrence, but it did happen.

“Sometimes I feel like you only hang out with us for the food we bring.” Jimin tskd, but pulled out various convenience store snacks from his backpack.

“I could kiss you right now!” Hobi cheered, receiving a scoff from Taehyung. “But I won't!”

You sat in a small corner of the blanket, just so your ass would fit over it, right by Yoongi’s legs. He didn’t mind your proximity, you were the only friend who had free reign in his personal space; a fact you were really proud of. Even Hoseok used to mock him for being whipped for you.

Jeongguk looked a little out of place, not knowing if he should sit by Tae and Jimin, since they didn’t really know each other, or try to find a small spot on the blanket next to you or simply give up and sit by his cousin. So you patted the sand next to you and he happily joined you.

“Why haven’t we met before?” Tae asked the new guy with a crease to his eyebrow.

Your friend group had been formed a few years ago. What started with you and Joon, grew when he met Yoongi and Hoseok, and you met Taehyung and Jimin. Then Hoseok brought in his old friend Seokjin and all seven of you mixed well with each other, forming the close bond you all had today.

Maybe Jeongguk would stick around long enough to join in as your eight piece.

“I was living in Seoul for the past five years, to finish high school.” he answered your photographer friend. “Then I did two years of architecture major at university, but it wasn’t my thing.”

“It wasn’t our thing either.” you said, looking at Joon.

Both of you had gone to different unis to chase a degree that neither of you really wanted. Only to realize your time and money should go into something you actually loved and could make a worthy life out of. From your friend group, only Seokjin and Yoongi actually had finished their post-graduate education.

“It was that cliche of ‘it’s my parents’ dream, not mine’.” Jeongguk nodded.

“What’s your dream, then?” Tae asked.

“Music.”

“Well, you’ll fit in nicely then.” Jimin giggled, taking comfort in his boyfriend’s arms.

“Aish, stop hogging the snacks!” you were still waiting for Hoseok to share.

As you and his oldest friend bickered and laughed over which snack you should open first, Yoongi watched you with careful and fond eyes. He also noted how Jeongguk didn’t seem to remove his eyes from you either. Ever. It shouldn’t bother him, but it did.

The maknae seemed like a good guy, Yoongi knew that he was. Namjoon wouldn’t have brought him into their business if he wasn’t. Jeongguk clearly wanted to learn, and he did have a couple good ideas in the short time he had been working at Mikrokosmos.

But Yoongi was used to being the center of attention. Well, the center of your attention. He chuckled to himself because what kind of friend with benefit would he be to you if he felt jealous of every new person that came into your life?

It wouldn’t be fair to you, it wouldn’t be fair to him, and it wouldn’t be fair to Hobi; who was also included in his mess of a ‘love’ life. If the fucking casually he was doing with the two of you could even be considered that.

Things would go back to normal, he believed. Jeongguk was an old acquaintance of yours, he was a novelty right now. It would pass. That’s what Yoongi thought until the younger man took off his bomber jacket and your eyes lit up at the amount of tattoos he had on his right arm.

Oh, he was fucked now.

“Guk!” you yelped as you noticed all of the drawings in the man’s arm. “Can I see?”

“Sure thing.”

Jeongguk offered you his arm as you let go of the cuttlefish snacks you’ve been munching on –which got snatched back by Hoseok. You always loved tattoos, even if you were too scared of needles to get them yourself. And you especially liked that Jeongguk’s tattoos blended well together, like he actually thought about them, not just got them on impulse.

“I designed all of them.” he told you as your fingertips traced the ink on his skin.

“No wonder your parents wanted you to be an architect. You have a gift.”

You could see a microphone, which told you he really did have a love for music, some words in English, a clock, a snake, a lily flower…

“‘Please love me’?” you smiled. “Are you a romantic guy, Jeonggukkie?”

He shrugged, but his cousin mocked a laugh: “He believes in soulmates and shit.”

“Do nooooot!” he whined in his defense.

“I think it’s cute if you do.” you thought out loud. Your fingers were still moving up and down his arm. “How far up do they go?”

“Up to my shoulder.” his lips pulled into a side smirk. “I can show you later.”

You weren’t a particularly shy person, but there was something in Jeongguk’s gaze and the implication behind his words that made your face burn. Maybe it was the way his baby face didn’t match his tattoos, or his muscles, that made your brain go a little haywire and malfunction.

As you watched the sun go down in the sky, and the cold air started to settle in that May afternoon, the conversations around you traveled and mingled. Jimin told the group about the new photoshoot his agency had just booked for him, Taehyung raved about the new strings he had gotten for his bass, Hoseok shared pictures Jin had sent him of the new set and stage for the play he had the leading role in and Namjoon asked for tickets for the opening night.

Yoongi was a little quiet, you noticed. Well, quieter than usual. So you turned back to him, giving his knee two squeezes to make sure he was okay. His lips formed a thin line, but his eyes were soft as always.
