Hey everyone, I hope you are all doing well!
A quick update and a little behind the scenes info for you.
For those not familiar with the process of 3D rendering, nearly every item you see in a scene had to be bought as a "3D Asset"... Clothes. Hair, Props, vehicles, buildings, etc... And all of those things have a "texture map" (an image the tells the computer what the surface SHOULD look like). But the trouble is, no two content creators seem to agree on what the proper settings for some surfaces are... Add to that the problem that there are multiple programs and render engines they could be using, versus what you may be using, so the settings for textures can be all over the place!
The upshot of all that is that almost every time I buy a new asset, I have to adjust the textures settings. Usually with things like buildings and cars, I load the new item into a pre-lit space (the grey room you may see in some test renders) and I adjust the textures until it looks normal to me... Then i save it as a "scene subset" so I have a ready to go room or car I can just drop into a scene to save time.
Well, I had an idea for a short comic, that required a restaurant for Nikki and the girls to have lunch at... No problem, I thought, knowing that I had at least two restaurants I had bought for just such a situation... Then I load them and realized that I had never set up the textures... "Crap" I thought, knowing that the next couple of hours would be spent adjusting and lighting the room... So I decided that if I was gonna do it, i was gonna do it right... Since I had been meaning to make a "joke" fast food chain for later comics for a while anyway...
So I spent the next couple of days making new textures for the food containers and bags, making a logo, and making textures for the employee shirts... And thus "Meaty's: Burgers, Subs, and Pizza" was born...
So keep an eye out for references in future comics... I hear Nikki even used to work there, so maybe even a future comic...
