Just got premium a week ago, been listening to the podcast since ep 25, my dad is from Olinala Guerrero Mexico, and he did not teach me, or my brothers Spanish, or about our families ancestry. I still never heard his boarder crossing story. He was very adamant on a white family type idea, and wouldn’t even celebrate Mexican holidays with us or anything. Butmy mother thought it was important to teach us our history and about Our Mexican identity. Just relating to the story about the Mexican father opting to keep his kids from seen as the “other”

I'm late to the boat here, but I study speech and language, and wanted to spread the knowledge that it's when you learn a language's sounds that impacts if you have accented speech. So if the kid's exposed to English speech (in person) before about 8 years old, they will develop the same accent as those they most speak English with! I've worked with many kiddos whose parents either don't speak English or whose parents' English is very accented, and the kids' English always sounds native-like, even though they've only spoken it since Kindergarten. People also think that learning another language means you may have difficulty learning English, which is also not true! Home languages and school languages can be different without any issue, and bilingualism is actually proven to have many benefits academically and socially! My dad did the same thing as slime's boss from Mexico. We're brazillian and he was made fun of as a kid for speaking portuguese, so he decided not to teach me or my siblings. Now that we've grown up he says he regrets it because knowing another language would've given us so many more job opportunities. I'm trying to learn portuguese on my own now just to feel less alienated from other latines. It's a struggle but I'm getting there lol.

I am Scottish and I sound so absurdly American because when I was younger all my internet friends were American and I slowly changed my accent to make myself understandable and now it's drilled into my head and I struggle to speak without the accent.
