Order of the Phoenix - Chapter 53

The clearing had transformed into a battlefield, bathed in the unnatural glow of the Lumos Maxima. Harry, adrenaline pumping through his veins, took a daring step forward, his voice ringing with a newfound confidence.

"Lucius Malfoy!" he bellowed, his voice echoing through the swamp. "Hiding in the shadows again? Afraid to face a couple of Hogwarts students?"

Lucius, momentarily stunned by the audacity of the challenge, emerged from the treeline, his face contorted with rage. "Potter!" he snarled, his voice dripping with venom. "You insufferable brat! This is between me and you. Let the girl go."

Harry feigned a look of surprise, his eyes wide with mock innocence. "The girl? You mean Daphne? She's right here, eager to teach you a lesson in manners."

While Harry's taunts drew Lucius's attention, Daphne, using the chaos as cover, silently maneuvered through the undergrowth. Her footsteps were light as a feather, her movements fluid and silent as she circled around towards Lucius's blind spot.

Lucius, his focus entirely on Harry, sneered. "You're a fool, Potter. Always have been. You think you can match my power? You're nothing but a meddling child with a stolen wand."

Harry grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "A stolen wand? You of all people should know that the wand chooses the wizard, Lucius. And this wand," he flourished his holly and phoenix feather wand, "has chosen me."

Their duel of words continued, each taunt and insult a carefully calculated distraction. While Harry kept Lucius's attention focused on him, Daphne crept closer, her wand at the ready. She could feel the adrenaline coursing through her veins, her heart pounding in her chest.

Suddenly, Lucius's head snapped to the side, his senses alerted to Daphne's presence. He whirled around, his wand raised in a menacing arc. "Crucio!" he shrieked, the curse aimed directly at Daphne.

Daphne reacted with lightning reflexes, diving to the side as the deadly curse whizzed past her, scorching the leaves where she had stood a moment before. She rolled onto her feet, her wand already raised. "Stupefy!" she shouted, a jet of red light hurtling towards Lucius.

Lucius, surprised by her agility, barely managed to deflect the spell. He snarled, his eyes burning with fury. "You'll pay for that, you insolent girl!"

Harry, seeing his opportunity, joined the fray. "Stupefy!" he yelled, his spell narrowly missing Lucius's shoulder.

Lucius, now facing attacks from both sides, unleashed a torrent of curses, forcing Harry and Daphne to duck and weave for cover. The clearing became a blur of light and sound, the air thick with magical energy.

Suddenly, Lucius disappeared, the space where he had stood a moment before now empty. Harry and Daphne froze, their wands still raised, their eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of their foe.

"Damn it!" Harry cursed, his voice laced with frustration. "He Apparated."

Daphne lowered her wand, her shoulders slumping. "We almost had him."

They turned to face Caine and Duquesne, who were watching them with a mixture of awe and disbelief. The SWAT team, their weapons now lowered, stared at the teenagers with a newfound respect.

"What... what just happened?" Caine asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Daphne, her voice tinged with exhaustion, replied, "He got away. For now."

Harry nodded grimly. "But he'll be back. And when he does, we'll be ready."

The commander, who had been watching the exchange with a mixture of fascination and skepticism, stepped forward. "Lieutenant," he said, his voice gruff but respectful, "I think you owe us an explanation."

Caine nodded, a weary smile tugging at his lips. "You're right, Commander. You do."
