NYC Blog #5 | The Real Chinatown

When I first moved to NYC, a local told me that the real Chinatown is in Flushing, Queens.

In a way, I can see why they would say that. Chinatown in Manhattan is full of tourist with lots of souvenir shops.

If you ever visit Flushing Chinatown, it’s almost like you are in another country. There are places where menus are in other languages completely where you will have to rely on either pictures or Google translate. Plus Flushing Chinatown is cheaper than Manhattan Chinatown. It’s still crowded, but crowded with locals.

If you ever go watch the Mets or the US Open and have extra time, Flushing Chinatown is only one subway stop away.

That's a great idea! Especially since a lot of the menus are foreign.

It's a haul from Manhattan, (about 1 hr on the 7-train), but such a kick to climb out of the ground and feel like you've be transported into China. So many food choices, it's overwhelming. The New World Mall food court on Roosevelt Ave is a starting point. The entrance on Main St leads to the New World food market with so many live seafood cases, you lose count. Beyond that, there are an extreme abundance of great food places, a local tour guide would be worth hiring to help in the task in choosing.

A lot of people in that area actually have cars since the subway doesn't go further than Flushing. They have street parking and parking garages.

I saw that weird looking tall building from CitiField last week - it must be close. They probably have street parking or parking nearby. Thanks - I’ll check it out next time after an afternoon
