Creator Blog #14 - Quarterly Check-in

Every quarter I make it a point to review the channel. This is a time to see what's working and not working — for the audience, the algorithm, and myself.

So what do I do during this time?

I review analytics, re-read comments, re-watch videos, review the mission and vision, review the 5-year and 10-year plans, gather inspiration, and experiment with new ideas or techniques. Then I make necessary changes based on what I've processed and how I feel about everything.

I also keep a weekly journal of wins and opportunities (I don't like to use the word "losses"). Reviewing the journal is also part the quarterly check-in.

Having said all this, I'm due for a quarterly check-in this week. So on October 15 there will not be a video upload. The idea of missing an upload is hard to grapple with, but I feel it's necessary to keep the channel healthy, relevant, and engaging.

I call it an avatar. When I say "review the algorithm" I don't intend to change my content for the sake of the algorithm. It's the opposite. I investigate how I can make the algorithm work for me. I think it's when people chase the algorithm that it becomes sad.

Using your "stick figure" vs. you in person. Would you call it a "persona"? I don't know what the correct term is. Females will get male clicks...that's just the way it is. I don't mean to offend by it - but it is true. Is the persona helping or hurting you... or is it not a factor? I should've been a systems architect - I try to look at things holistically.

I don't really understand what you mean by "meme" video.

It's sad that you have to factor in the algorithm when creating content, but it is a good chunk of it. If you would share at some point in time - - do you get more clicks when you do a live video vs. the "meme" and do they watch the entire clip? In other words, does the "meme" benefit or hurt you?
