Why the New Deal Matters (w/ Eric Rauchway)

In this episode, Matt is joined by historian Eric Rauchway for a deep-dive into his new book, Why the New Deal Matters. It's Rauchway's latest effort to recover Franklin Delano Roosevelt as an anti-fascist political leader who sought to expand the meaning and practice of American democracyβ€”that in a robust democracy, people don't just need enough to live on, but something to live for. Topics include: Herbert Hoover's and FDR's different responses to the Bonus Army's march on Washington; why Hoover is the true founding father of modern conservatism; how FDR understood the New Deal as more than just a pragmatic series of experiments; the importance to the New Deal of public art and projects like building libraries and theaters; why, despite its compromises with white supremacists in the Democratic Party, the New Deal continues to inspire; and more!

Any chance this will be put in front of the paywall at some point? I’d love to send this to friends & family to get them learnt on how omni-present the New Deal is in the U.S. (and how we take it for granted)

Loved this episode! Definitely going to put in a purchase requesr for the title at my library!

Hey before I cancel my subscription, I just wanted to know how long Sam was going to go on defending Newsmax propagandists and their sinophobic conspiracizing?

Sam Sharpe

Loved this conversation. All the FDR / New Deal talk made me feel like I was listening to Left Anchor -- I kept expecting to hear Ryan Cooper's voice pop in. (Also, y'all should do more episodes with the Left Anchor boys!)

It sends me back to how I was originally taught about the New Deal in my high school in TX. I remember the history teacher who I think identified as "Moderate Independent" in 1992, spoke very favorably of the New Deal, but also said it was the only the war that dug us out of the depression. The New Deal was a bandaid, for that part of time, rather than the foundation of a lot of institutions and protections. The inference was some of these things we now love, like Social Security maybe would have happened anyway as we "advanced" and became more humane. Like a lot of hard-won things unions gave us, we don't think about it.

I second Jason's idea. I hope you will spend more time with the book, Matt!

Catherine M Stanford

Thanks Jason! That’s not a bad idea. It’s a dense book and I’d need to spend some more time with it

Matt's a great 'book interviewer' and should do more of them. I would love to hear him talk to Ziblatt about his book on conservative parties. Having read it after it was brought up by him, it feels like the spiritual counterpart to podcast. Both wager that it's actually worth understanding the beliefs-both ideological and strategic-of the reactionaries you oppose.

J

I'm sure this is excellent (I will listen in a bit) but someone needs to tell mr rauchway to revive his New Deal Stories podcast ASAP and so I am using this space to say that.

MD

That's something I've thought of, but I've never used Discord! Seems worth trying perhaps. (Matt)

Hmm. I just checked and it's playing fine for me. Others seemed to be able to listen, too. If you keep having trouble let us know. (Matt)

Know Your Enemy

very informative and interesting episode. would it ever be possible to get a KYE discord?

Erik Berg

Can’t listen for some reason
