hello newcomers
Added 2025-02-20 04:04:21 +0000 UTChi! big shout out from the goat ODD MOB today, was a pleasant surprise!
we hung out a bunch when he had a bit off in NYC and got to do some sessions. i'll share some of what he was mentioning on IG.
for those signing up for patreon - do it from your desktop. iOS charges a HUGE fee to process payments since the app store takes 30% (nuts!!)
some stuff on mixing / mastering odd mob and I talked about and some free game...
do note i'm an artist first of course, but got obsessed with trying to engineer for awhile and learned a ton by dissecting mixes/masters i really liked. that said, having good sounds make mixing a lot easier!!
plugins don't make the master, most of the greats JUST use a limiter on their master chain. great monitoring helps a TON though...skrillex, noisia and a lot of the pros work in well treated rooms, built by expert studio builders. your monitoring helps a lot, trusting it is key otherwise you're seeing the world through rose tinted glasses.
in my earlier video on mastering I talked about using SPAN, i recapped it recently in the most recent video on metering. this is a great way to check your overall tonality and balance. most masters are within a few DB of a -3 db noise slope, minus the sub bass which is heavily pushed in most club music.
kick + bass relationship matters big time in club focused music. i discuss this in a few videos, but in short, three things make a good kick/bass relationship, timing (timing of kick, it's size and sidechain), tuning (of kick mainly and how it relates to the bassline), and phase (making sure the waveforms start at the right cycle). VISION 4X is a nice meter to see these things.
my Pro L 2 process and hardclipping process is covered a few times, it's THE best workflow i've seen on the internet. the thing is with mastering is it's about compromise - we're crushing our mixes to get louder. my workflow using "delta" mode helps you make a decision on how much crushing you've got to do to get to industry loudness.
loudness isn't all it's cracked up to be :)
last but not least, lookahead on sidechain is awesome.
anyways, if this is a lot, keep in mind it's trimming down an hour long video to a few talking points...i walk through all of this stuff in videos slowly if you have no idea WTF i'm talking about :)
that said, cheers all and welcome to the patreon!
