RJ Check-In

Hello all! 

The last week has been pretty uneventful and chill on my end, so not a lot to talk about here. I've been working on the game, playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and watching a bunch of movies. 

Hey let's talk about movies! I'm a huge movie buff. I love watching movies and talking to people about movies. I was a movie critic on a website for a while, and I've written a couple of screenplays in the past as well. I think I've already told you guys my favorite movies in a previous post on here, but I don't think I've ever talked about how much I love "bad" movies. 

The first "bad" movie I can remember ever watching and loving for how bad it was was one called Night of the Bloody Apes. It's a Mexican horror movie about a mad doctor who replaces his sick son's heart with the heart of a gorilla. Then his son goes crazy and starts killing people. Also there's a ten-minute long female wrestling match in the middle of the movie, for no real reason. I loved it, and have been hooked on watching bad movies ever since then.

Cut to fifteen years later and I discovered Red Letter Media on Youtube. If you haven't ever watched these guys, they have a show called Best of the Worst where they get together and watch bad movies and then discuss them. It's pretty much my favorite thing on the internet. Their love of these movies reinvigorated my love and I started watching way more "bad" movies, until now I'm pretty sure I watch more bad stuff than good stuff. 

I don't do a very good job of keeping track of which movies I watch, but here's a few that I saw last week: 

Scarab (1983) - A movie about a Egyptologist who uses magical scarabs to control people. Starring Rip Torn, who is the youngest I've ever seen him here, and great as the bad guy. Also interesting is that it's written by Robert Jaffe, who is the father of Taliesin Jaffe (from Critical Role, if you know those guys). 

Hellbound (1994) - Chuck Norris versus an emissary of Satan. A bunch of laughably bad performances, fun music score, and just the dumbest concept. I had a lot of fun with this one.

Tomb Invader (2018) - A rip-off of Tomb Raider made by Asylum, who notoriously make ripoff movies. This one was good for about fifteen minutes, then just got really boring. I think my favorite part was that the main character was named Alabama Channing and her rival was Nathan Carter, obvious references to Indiana Jones and Nathan Drake. This one wasn't really worth watching, but had a couple of fun moments. 

Grand Isle (2019) - This one is one of those straight-to-DVD movies that Nicolas Cage has been making five a year of for the last dozen years or so. I don't even think I would call this a "bad" movie. It's good. It's a little bland, but still good. I'll talk about my love for Nicolas Cage later, but I believe he elevates every single movie that he's in, and it's no exception here. He is the only thing in this movie that is not completely bland. Just a quick synopsis - it's about a guy who is stuck at a house he was working on during a hurricane and he is being seduced by his employers wife and both his employer and his wife seem to be a little crazy. 

Okay, that's it. I'll stop talking about movies now. I know I watched four or five other movies, but I can't even remember them at the moment. Let me know if you guys like hearing me ramble on about movies. I have no idea if this is interesting or not.
