Now, in my experience, the military tends to operate on a rule of 3s: For every soldier on-duty, there's another one held at readiness , and a third resting. I thought about this for far too long, and in the end I decided to bend that rule. For one thing, if there are sixteen Marines on guard and another sixteen in their bunks, there's nowhere for the sixteen 'readiness' troops to go. More importantly, from a narrative perspective, the fight would have been just too big, and I'd have lost the 'quality against quantity' vibe I was going for.
So that means sixteen on-duty Marines and sixteen at rest; reading books, hanging out, curled up in bed, that sort of thing. When the alarms go off, they're going to end up having to scramble to arm themselves and move to block the choke-points before it's too late.
