Studying water & rocks 🏞🌲✨ + all done filming the real-time process video! 🎞

Hello again! 🥰

Today has been a busy day of filming for the studio vlog, drawing, & screen-recording, and I wanted to show you guys an environment study I’ve been working on! 🍃

I want to get better at drawing environments with a character in them, which has always been a struggle for me! 😅 I usually find it hard to figure out how to simplify a character into a small form that doesn’t disrupt the overall flow of the environment or distract from it, so this was such a challenge! But I had sooo much fun with studying and trying to learn 🥰 I think the key with drawing tiny characters is reducing them down to their most basic shapes and trying to give them the same level of detail as their surroundings, rather than giving them too much detail or too little.

I screen-recorded the whole process of this drawing for a real-time process video so you guys can watch the full drawing process and see my whole screen while I draw 😌 (and witness the struggle of drawing the character hehe 😂🙈) We’ll start editing the video tonight and hopefully post it tomorrow!! 😍

Alright that’s all 🥰 I hope you guys are having a lovely day/night! 🌻

Love,

Lydia ✏️

This looks amazing. I love anything with nature in it

Hayley

Gosh, how are you doing that? Looks both realistic and expressive! Awesome study))

Snezhka

Haha I used to dislike them more than anything! 🙈 but now I’m growing much more fond of them and want to make a lot more of them! 🥰💛

Lydia Elaine

Thank you so much Kimberley!! 🥰 I had so much fun with it and I’m happy you like it! 😍💛

Lydia Elaine

Haha yess!! I would love to make a future step-by-step or video about the process because it’s much more systematic than portraits I think! 🥰

Lydia Elaine

Aww thanks Mandy!! I’m happy you like it! 😍

Lydia Elaine

Thanks Lara!! 🥰 the drawing took about an hour and a half! I think my number one tip when it comes to drawing a landscape study from reference is to approach the process systematically and stay organized in the beginning; start with a quick basic sketch that focuses only on composition because that’s what will really help the painting look complete I think! Then focus on laying down flat colors and shapes that follow the composition. It can be easy to get carried away with the smallest details or features, but I think it’s important to simplify it and save the smaller details for the very end. After flat colors and shapes, I usually follow with shading to bring out the 3D forms and light! I really want to make a video about the process in the future because I’m sure I could explain it much better that way! 🙈 but I hope that makes sense and helps a little!! 💛

Lydia Elaine

yeah I LOVE environment studies 🧡

liliyth

Wow this entire piece is such a treat to the eyeballs! 😍 This is stunning!

Kimberley

Omg MORE LANDSCAPE drawings with real time videos (step by step) please Lydia!!! Because landscape is easier to follow along and does not require anatomy knowledge like portraits 😅

Can’t wait to see the process! 😮 it looks amazing! How long did this study take you? Do you have any tips about how to approach such complicated photos when transforming them into paintings?

mlara_artescape

Wow! This looks absolutely incredible! Great job!

Mandy

Awh thanks Genesis!! 😄💛

Lydia Elaine

Thank you so much for the kind words Lilz!! 🥰 And yes I do use a tripod! The one I got is from Amazon and it’s called “Neewer 72.4 inch aluminum camera tripod”, and it’s got a horizontal adjustment for top-down view filming which I love! 💛 When it comes to reflections, I usually have my iPad slightly tilted up while I’m facing a window, which helps control the reflections pretty well I think! If there’s a window to my right or left side, then there’s usually a problem with reflections, so I think it helps to face a window and have the iPad tilted towards you 😌 I hope that makes sense! 💛

Lydia Elaine

This is incredible Lydia!🤩 You paint landscapes so beautifully, capturing light and shadow in a very painterly approach. I am in awe everytime you do a landscape study! 👏✨ Also do you use a tripod to film and if so which one? If you have any tips on how to stop reflections on the screen that would be helpful too 👀💫

lilygrace_draws

It ended up looking great! You did an amazing job with it 🙌🏻✨💖
