Bungie's Marathon (2023)
Added 2025-10-25 13:46:01 +0000 UTCThe fourth and final instalment of The Denfield Hoard is a look at Bungie's Marathon, starting with the Marathon Demo. After not being able to find a Marathon angle that has not been done to death on YouTube, I turn my frustration to The Act Man and the misinformation he spreads about the influences for Halo. The Denfield Hoard comes back into focus at the end of the video. Also, a big thanks in the credits to the Patreon supporters, listed by name.
The "grandaddy of all Bungie Fans", Hamish Sinclair, would go on to post a summary of this video on his legendary Marathon Story page.
The video starts out with an amusing look at some of the quirks in the Marathon Demo 0.0 and goes on to discuss how the Marathon games introduced new concepts to the FPS genre. Most of the video however is taken up by attempts to correct YouTube misconceptions about which games influenced Halo.
As readers of the Story page know... trying to correct people on the internet is like trying to stop the Pfhor from using the trih xeem . It's just not going to work.
Nevertheless 65scribe goes about it in a humorous way using clips from Monty Python's Life of Brian to evoke the slavish devotion people have for the opinions of the YouTube intelligentsia.
Aahhh, life in the glorious 21th century.
Way better than Google AI could have done!
This video features none other than Ron McAdams of "Ron's Computer Videos", who agreed to make an appearance! Hamish says in a personal message:
I really enjoyed the video, particularly the sketch with Ron and your map Farchie's Revenge. Ron did a great job keeping a straight face on that. Indeed I had to do a double take but then realised that Ron started his numbering at #100.
As for this video upload on Patreon, I 'tightened-up' the Halo clip, because that went on too long in retrospect.

My follow-up video on the NEW Marathon game and The Act Man's terrible video about first person shooters is tacked on the end of this video. Go to 36:11 to watch it.

That’s great to hear that this was the first video you saw. The video was mostly for people already following the channel. With the random structure, I wouldn’t think it would be a great introduction for first time viewers. But ‘Actman frustration’ saved me in your case. I could definitely see some potential for Actman at the time, but since then he continues taking the ‘high output, repetitive structure, rapid burnout trajectory’. There was only one video in the last couple years that I thought was good, and it was a completely different and simple one with his brother. Pointless trying to argue with anyone on the internet, like Hamish said, but this video did let me vent to my audience. I’m happy that you keep watching and rewatching while I’m slowly bringing out new ones.

2025-10-26 00:10:00 +0000 UTCThis is actually how I first found your channel. YouTube decided to intersect my interest in Apple computers with my distaste for Act Man (can’t stand that guy!) and blessed me with introducing you. Since then I have watched and rewatched all of your wonderful videos many times. Thank you algorithm!
