The conversation that Canute and the priest had about love was definitely confusing. But part of me thinks that was done on purpose because the priest is trying to explain it while drunkπ The priest said death is the true essence of love. Meaning to unconditionally love someone is being able to die for them, reaping no benefit for yourself (since you're dead). Any other form of sacrifice is not true love, but discrimination (i.e. valuing one thing over another, not necessarily loving it). For example, in Episode 14 they had to murder a village to keep Canute's location/identity a secret. Of course, Ragnar let them do it for Canute, but it was him putting Canute's life over those villagers. Then there's Thors who died to protect what he believed in without even drawing a sword. That's why the priest was so taken aback when he was told out him. He believes that to be true love.
