Ability Cards

Hello everyone, I had to have my gallbladder removed this weekend! I've lost count of the number of times I've been in the ER while Danmaku!! is going on. But I refuse to die and am bored just sitting here, so let's take a casual look at the Ability Card cycle in Wolf of Black Market's Market deck.

The Ability Cards in Touhou 18 Unconnected Marketeers and beyond added a Rogue-Like element to the Touhou games. Now you could get a little piece of another Touhou's powers for your run. Of course for a game like Danmaku!!, this provided a wealth of Item cards to import into our own card game, resulting in a kind of meta-card game going on.

The first is Ability Card itself. Going full meta, this card lets you get another character's Ability or Spell Card via the extra character mechanic. Extra Characters were introduced in Lunatic Extra as we wanted a way to allow players to get another character's Spell Card. We once again use the Extra Character mechanic to allow you to get new powers from other Touhous without implementing a card for every one. From here on we'll look at the ones we did implement specific rules for.

Snake & Frog Amulets is actually related to Ability Card. Both of these cards are part of the Market deck's Cheap Artifact mechanic. It's sad to not have an artifact, so these stand in for you until you can get something better. These are the only artifacts that can duplicates as well. The Snake & Frog Amulets give you a bunch of +1 bonuses. Sometimes a numerical bonus like this is actually the best choice. It's why a +1 sword in D&D can be such a big deal.

I insisted we use Annoying UFO in the Market deck because I wanted to make this illustration happen. In Touhou 18 the UFO is a shield that erases bullets. In Danmaku!!, it crane-catches your opponent and prevents them from attacking further. It's a strange mix of Ghostly Lantern and Revenge Shot.

"To beat the enemy, you need trustworthy allies. Speaking of which,
your options are always right by your side, aren't they?
If they could become shields that erase bullets...!"

Just like Idol Defense Corps, Reliable Tanuki is directly based on the mainline game card. This adorable furry companion gives you power and protects your power when you lose life.

Previously Ability Card, now with the mechanics of Centipede's Power, is Vampire Fang. This is another piece where the in-universe card appears on the illustration. It works to show how the heck Sakuya became a vampire suddenly. To be more transparent than we need to be, we changed things around because we were really struggling to illustrate "Centipede's Power". I think the Rumia piece was the correct choice. She's powered up and is going to eat you!!

In case you're stubborn like me and refuse to die, Phoenix Tail is one way you can make that happen. Mokou is holding the feather over her heart here. It's symbolic and all that.

This piece is glorious I love it. Underground Sun allows players send their hand into a nuclear reaction, fusing and fissioning into something brand new. This card is part of our "Bespoke Artifact" cycle, which is 7 and 8 point cards for ending a game with.

One of the last ones is Chimata's blank card. Yuugi's got it in this illustration for Some Reason. I can't be too sure. Like you'd expect, this card allows you to control the market. At such a bargain price it's definitely not a weak card!

All of the art is queued to finish Traditional Festival of Paradise. We're almost at the finish line. It's been a long road. This month we'll finish out the characters in TFoP and prepare for launch. Thank you for your continued support.

Good luck with operation recovery, and also with the whole TFoP finish line!!
