Buffy The Vampire Slayer 7x7 & 7x8 | "Conversations with Dead People" & "Sleeper"

My reaction to Buffy Season 7 Episodes 7 and 8.

Comments

Prolific musician Aimee Mann is the only real-life musical artist to have a speaking line in Buffy — “Man, I hate playing vampire towns”— which means canonically she’s a character in the Buffyverse!

Hey thank you for joining! I have seen The Shining and Doctor Sleep. I actually prefer Doctor Sleep lol. I have reactions for Hill House and Midnight Mass, but I still need to do House of Usher.

Chance's House Of Horror

I LOVE your reactions (which is why I joined your Patreon). Have you seen The Shining and Doctor Sleep? I LOVE those, and think you might too (Mike Flanagan, who did Dr Sleep) is absolutely AMAZING IMO (his miniseries about The Fall of the House of Usher was mind-blowingly amazing, IMHO.) If you do ever watch it, keep in mind that they shot a scene with a little boy ("lucky number 19", the baseball boy) who did such an amazing acting job that not only were the other actors shaken by his all-too-realistic performance, but even Stephen King was a tad freaked out by it).

These 2 eps are iconic

The instrument the guy is playing looks like something called a Harmonium, specifically an Indian Harmonium also called a Hand Harmonium, among other names. From Wikipedia: The Indian harmonium, hand harmonium, samvadini, peti ("box"), or vaja, often just called a harmonium, is a small and portable hand-pumped reed organ which is very popular in the Indian subcontinent.[The sound resembles an accordion or other bellows driven free-reed aerophones. Reed-organs arrived in India during the mid-19th century, possibly with missionaries or traders.Over time they were modified by Indian craftsmen to be played on the floor (since most traditional Indian music is done in this fashion), and to be smaller and more portable. This smaller Indian harmonium quickly became very popular in the Indian music of the 19th and 20th century. It also became widely used for Indian devotional music played in temples and in public. The Indian harmonium is still widely used today by Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists for devotional genres like qawwali, ghazal, kirtan and bhajan. In South Asia, the harmonium is most widely used to accompany vocalists.

CWDP is definitely another 'in my top 10' episode. Just so well done. I do love that we see some development in terms of Buffy's shadow self, not just in Conservations when she admits she feels superior to her friends, but also in Selfless when she says, "I am the law". Faith was representative, in part, of Buffy's shadow self in season 3, albeit a darker and less controlled/mature version. Now we're seeing Buffy echo some of Faith's ideas, but from a point of growth and maturation.

I was toooo blasted to be watching episode 7. It was a wild ride lol. Correction both these episodes lol

It would have been really cool to see Jessie! Loved all of the dialogue with Buffy and the Vamp Shrink lol. I don't like Anchovies but that jingle is catchy!

Chance's House Of Horror

Man I’ve been broke as helllllll the past few months but I had to make sure my sub to you was paid up before you got to CWDP. SO many amazing things packed in one episode: -It got nominated for an Emmy I do believe. I think the only other one that ever got nomme’d for anything major was Hush, & that was just for the score. -Favorite line of the whole ep: “anchovies, anchovies, you’re so delicious! I love you more than all the other fishes!” I’ve never tried an anchovy, but I sing that out loud every time I see tins at the grocery store -We lost Jonathan (rip to the homie) I admit it didn’t impact me as much though when I originally saw it air. But now it does. . There was just so much going on) and the Andrew hate is so common but he’s so funny🤣 don’t get me wrong, if I had to choose one of them to die, it would be Andrew. Or both of them. not Jonathan. I say this because though both of them had potential for redemption arcs, Jonathan sort of already had his, and then went “back to evil” via joining the trio 3 seasons after the bell tower talk with Buffy. That would’ve been an interesting topic to explore, you don’t see that much And the final season should have as many reoccurring characters to pull on our heartstrings as possible. I’m pretty sure that, too, was a matter of availability. Danny Strong was doing other stuff by that point. - Tara referenced -Buffy finally gets a little bit of much needed therapy, but from the most unlikely shrink (I love how this show does irony) -The song playing at the beginning & the end “blue” is perpetually on every playlist I’ve ever had since 2003 -The first and ONLY episode without Xander in it. I’ve seen so much online about how it was a huge wish for joss to have him be visited by Jesse. (the guy who died in the second episode of the series! The one that was friends with Willow and Xander before Buffy arrived!) the rumor is that it was either cut for time, or because the actor for Jesse was unavailable, probably both. -It is one of only 2 episodes with a title card- once more with feeling is the other. -apparently amber benson turned down the offer to show up as Tara. She didn’t want to taint the character’s image for fans. She loves her craft and Tara so much that she turned down what would’ve been an easy check. -Spike’s FOINE self

Alysha

Didn't catch that! lol

Chance's House Of Horror

I’ve rewatched Buffy at least 10 times over the years and this is the first time I’ve caught that the friend Dawn is on the phone with in Conversations With Dead People is Kit, the girl she befriended in the first ep of this season 😅

BattyT

That song that she’s playing is still in rotation 20 years on as well!

The legendary Aimee Mann making a joke about vampire towns has lived rent free in my head for years.. I was a huge fan of til Tuesday when I was a kid and seeing her appear on my favorite tv show was wild ❤️❤️

Aurro Eronaile

Very cool! I loved the tone and structure of this episode.

Chance's House Of Horror

Conversations with Dead People is one of my favorite episodes. Yay! One of the only episodes to have a title card. Joss also wrote the lyrics to the song the band is singing at Bronze in the opening of the episode. If I recall correctly it is called Blue. 4 different writers wrote the different storylines on this episode. Its also the only episode Xander isn't in.
