2025-07-01 21:52:47 +0000 UTCI've always seen Spike as a romantic, as in the romanticism movement kind of romantic. Romanticism was an artistic, literary and social movement that started in the late 18th century and ran through to the mid-late 19th century. Romantics were big on stuff like individualism and extremes of emotion and emotional expression. Say, for example, Spike chaining Buffy up and threatening to stake Dru in front of her to prove his love, or let Dru kill Buffy if Buffy didn't give him a smidge of hope that his love would be reciprocated. Or, if you want to go back further, Spike deciding he just had to tie Dru up and torture her until she loved him again. Buffy would be right to worry about Spike getting his chip out, because a Romanticist who has no soul, and therefore no type of moral braking system, is potentially a very dangerous prospect. I like that they mention the whole chip vs soul thing in this episode, because it does remind us that Spike is still a threat without the chip; no matter how much of a lovestruck puppy he is.
