Just wanted to add one little detail, Jossβ first idea was to have Joyce die in season 4 and SMG lobbied to have her not die, so Joss relented.. for one season π€£π€£ hence in the season 4 premiere when Buffy says βwait until mom sees the bill for these books.. I hope itβs a funny aneurismβ β οΈ

2025-07-17 23:24:27 +0000 UTCAnd sorry if you did recognise him (just pressed play so not up to that part yet), but the demon guy they go see about the resurrection spell (Doc) is played by Academy Award winning actor, Joel Grey. They have had some big name actors on the show before, like Harris Yulin and Vincent Schiavelli, who was Oscar nominated), but Joel Grey was the first actual Oscar winner to appear on the show. As the story goes Joss apparently already had him in mind to play the role of Doc, but the producers/casting people were super reluctant to approach Joel about it, because they thought they couldn't possible ask someone who had won an Academy Award to be on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And then apparently it turned out that he was a fan of the show and was thrilled to be asked to play a small role in an episode. Btw if you haven't seen the movie Cabaret from 1972 (Joel Grey plays the Master of Ceremonies, which he won Best Support Actor for), then I highly recommend it. It is a musical, but a dark musical with a lot of heavy themes, and it's just brilliant.

2025-07-17 22:02:42 +0000 UTCJust about to watch the reaction, but I did want to wait for this episode to drop before I mentioned anything about Kristine Sutherland (Joyce) leaving the show. I will need to check some of the stuff I've got downloaded (which is currently not loading properly, stupid computer) for more exact details, but basically Kristine kind of felt Joyce's story arc was done by the end of season 3, wanted to spend time with her family in Europe (Italy I think?), and was ready to leave the show. I think Joyce's death was already planned from season 3 (there is some stuff coming up in a future season that was planned from season 2), so the arrangement was that she would only do a few episodes of Season 4, have time off for family stuff and travel, then return full time in season 5 with the understanding that her character would die in episode 16. Once my computer stops having a hissy fit, I'll try and update with more exact details regarding Kristine Sutherland's exit from the show. There is a really sweet behind the scenes story about Kristine Sutherland as well. Apparently the cast were devastated to lose her from the show, and SMG fought to have Joyce not die, because Kristine was a genuine mother figure to the younger cast. She apparently made sure they had someone to talk to when they needed it, made sure they ate and rested properly if it was a long day's shoot, tried to always be there for the younger cast if they needed to talk or destress. Honestly she sounds like a lovely woman and an amazing person to work with.
