Buffy The Vampire Slayer 6x4 | Flooded

My reaction to Buffy Season 6 Episode 4 "Flooded".

Comments

I missed this reaction and came back to it- glad you pointed out the still shot of SMG they have at the end of the new title sequence during the theme song- you know why it bugs me? It’s not Buffy, it’s the Buffybot

I think she might’ve been referring to hospital bills for her mother.

What hospital bills? Woman was DOA. EMS, funeral expenses sure.

This comment also is for “life serial”

The comment was for the next episode of course

I love how each challenge starts with Buffy saying with forced enthusiasm “this is gonna be great!”. SMG has great comedic timing. And as usual she manages to bring it back to the drama in a split second. Not a lot of shows are capable of such tonal shifts seamlessly. BTVS is a master class for that. It can be jarring because they make you laugh while exploring very dark themes. One of the reasons why this show is so unique.

I doubt that Giles gave all of his money to Buffy. Two years ago after being fired by the council he had enough funds to live a whole year without an income. He had enough money to buy the magic shop last year and Buffy got him reinstated as her watcher with back pay from the month he was fired. And during all this time the slayer was never compensated for her “work”.

SMG is doing an amazing job at expressing all of this.

Now I can talk about one of the reasons I absolutely freaking adore this season. Let's see, so far with Buffy we've seen psychomotor retardation (her standing at the sink in a trance and being slow to move), emotional blunting (her not expressing a full range of emotions), anhedonia, which is an inability to find pleasure from things that are usually pleasurable or comforting (Giles is back, and Buffy says she's glad but her body language and expression doesn't convey that), withdrawal from friends (should be self evident), and sleep disturbance (which she admits to Giles). Survey says...Clinical Depression! This was the first show I saw that actually showed what depression can really be like, beyond just the ultra stereotypical 'very special episode' stuff that TV shows had done previously. BtVS absolutely nailed the reality of depression with an understanding and display of potential symptoms that went far beyond anything I had seen beforehand, and I am so grateful for the show being willing to go there.

“You’re a very stupid girl” GAGGED HER! 🤣

I never saw it that way with them freeloading.

And in my haste to comment I forgot to mention something that really stands out here too, a loooot of fans really take issue with Willow and Tara “freeloading” and eating up all of Buffy’s money but try to view it with a bit of grace.. it seems clear to me that the writers started off this season with “Buffy struggles after being torn out of heaven” and kinda reverse-engineered the money troubles to add to that

My favorite scene from this episode is when Buffy is staring at the faucet in the kitchen and Willow has to shut it off for her.. a perfect depiction of depression without saying the word because nobody talked about depression in the 90s/early 00s..
